Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Conspiracy theories aside, I actually find it pretty plausible that the "cheat" was compartmentalised with only a small number of people in the know. From what we are seeing/hearing/reading about other brands it seems to be pretty common practise to tweak the mapping so that in those specific test conditions emissions are tightly controlled vs real world where it may be a very different story (maybe those people who "hypermile" may get those results, but not normal humans).

Is it therefore possible that a couple of VW techs went a step further and figured that since real world was so different anyway... why not just tweak the WHOLE map and detect when that map should run! I think it's likely the techs local management team would have known, but generally the good news story of "we found a fix" is about the only thing that went upstairs.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

The impression I get is that other manufacturers do not switch maps like Vw did. The other manufacturers couldn't get their emissions to work and played by the rules. It's why most don't have a Diesel engine for the US in smaller cars.

If the test conditions were reproduced on the road the Vw would fail not just because of extra load but because it wouldn't recognize it was being tested and not switch to the test map.

      • People are very easy to manipulate onto thinking that the things exist or are happening and medias are doing a great job to achieve that.

The guardian out of the U.K. Is doing a particularly good job trying to draw other manufacturers in.

The thing that gets me is the regulator's documents are online for all and sundry to see with a simple google search.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story

I get that VW did the whole switch thing, but I get the impression that other brands make compromises in the mapping to get the results they need to pass given they know the test procedure. This would lead to a car that might suck unless you stick the boot in to get to the real power. VW just made the compromises in a map that real drivers never see

              • The trolls are out in force: oilburna , ducksonetime etc. Ohhh how you have personally been cheated! Ohhh, how you are such environmentalists! Please tell us, at what time have you ever checked the nitrogen oxides emissions of cars you purchased? When were you made aware such an emission existed?

                • Personally, I didn't check anything like CO2 or NOx bit did look at kW, Nm etc. L/100km is nice but I know the normal driver can't get near to these figures. Thing is, in the diesel Golf I get closer to the published L/100km than in any other car I've ever owned...

Things get tricky if, after the fix we're down significantly in kW or Nm.

VW have tried to deceive and have been caught doing so - they've admitted fault. Time will tell what the consequences are...

With 5 diesels in family, every our car gets better fuel economy than specified, and that's even after 140,000km and with the newer ones even in the city driving conditions.

So, I have no reason to be worried that the fuel economy would suffer.

Yes, admittedly on a trip or even lighter traffic I do meet the numbers (real numbers rather than those from the trip computer). There's something about Sydney traffic though...

Our Mk5 TDI consistently achieves better than the official figures in hills & city driving. In fact I think something is wrong if it's above. I put it down to driving style & I keep up with the traffic flow.

                            • My BMW X3 (3.0D) has official combined fuel figures of 6.0l/100km. Lol... I reckon average you could get about 7.5, and over the 50,000km I've driven I've averaged 8.2l/100km.

The whole fuel economy figures process is broken.
