Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I rechecked my Tiguan's VIN on the Australian VW site and it is clear but all reports I find from VWA state Tiguan 2008-2015 affected WTF?

The list of affected diesel cars includes:
    Volkswagen

    Golf (2009-2013)
    Polo (2009-2014)
    Jetta (2010-2015)
    Passat CC (2008-2012)
    Volkswagen CC (2011-2015)
    Passat (2008-2015)
    Eos (2008-2014)
    Tiguan (2008-2015)
    Caddy (2010-2015)
    Amarok (2011-2012)

    Dear Volkswagen customer,

We wish to confirm that your vehicle with the Vehicle Identification Number WVGZZZ5NZ9W0***** you submitted as at 07/10/2015 08:00:14 PM, is not affected by software that causes discrepancies in the values for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during dynometer runs.

IF VWG/VWA can't get consistent data released to their customers, just another bullet heading their way from the class action lawyers. Personally I've had enough. As I want to upgrade vehicles, waiting until a recall by end of January and refits until Dec 2016 DAS Hopeless!

    • Put in the VIN for our MY13 MK7 Golf TDI, apparently not affected.

      • I went and typed in my VIN for my 2015 Multivan and got the same result. Wonder if the VW website is just to allay fears until the full extent of the aussie problem can be determined. Hmmm

        • According to VW Germany, as of this mornings news, the recalls will start early next year in Germany. Don't know about the rest of the World

I've just checked a European VIN Checker that indicates not affected for a MY09 Tiguan 103TDI. If I change the year identifier to 2010 it flags emission cheat s/w affected. I can't believe all 2008-2015 Tiguans are affected when other motors in other models were changed over the same period, also the 103kw is old now. My Engine code is CBAB, no sign of EA 189.

VW are in the deep **** and drip feeding **** to try to stay afloat. This is a scandal getting bigger by the day, I'm surprised their shares aren't suspended until the true extent of this is known.

I agree that is likely. They know which cars have ea189 engines but no idea what the real emissions are on local fuel. If they are planning to offer a retune I'm hoping they can fix emissions and tweak boost to maintain performance.

The reported "cheat code" has not yet seen the light.

OTOH, our euro6 polo has a ridiculous lumpy cold start idle and aircon compressor that seems to have a mind of its own. Previous PD polo could blow huge clouds of smoke on heavy throttle legally.

Damn it, my 2010 Golf GTD is affected. After the recall (assuming it happens in AUS), how obliged are VW to return cars back to their owners as received, minus the "repairs" they need to make? I'm concerned because my car has ECU and DSG tunes.

Talk to your tuner first and see if they are happy to put the tune back on if/when it gets "wiped". You will want to have the recall sticker on your car for when you go to sell it but you'll want the tune back on as likely it'll be a significant downgrade from what you're used to driving.

More than likely your car is out of factory warranty now so there's less issues with your car getting flagged as "tuned". The only thing you have to be concerned about is if you were to try and claim goodwill warranty on the engine/DSG. There's a lot fewer problems with the 6 speed DSG in you GTD than the 7 speed in the entry level Golfs.

Put it that way. There are makes like Hyundai who produce even more kW from the 2.0L turbo diesels, so unless they cheat the emissions a big way, the VW should have no problem to tune the affected engine to comply and deliver even greater power.

There is a similar scheme in Australia, offering $1,000 towards the purchase of a Highline or performance model. Been on the owners part of the VW website since August but due to expire end of October.

Why I’d still buy a Volkswagen

My MY13 125TDI Passat is affected (checked up on the VW Australia website) and I would still buy ... wait for it .... a Passat! Don't know whether it would be a petrol or diesel variant though. Ha! Ha!

                            • I drive a golf7 R which obviously hasn't been affected by the current fiasco. However, has anybody mentioned what all this has done to the valuation of their vehicles, especially those who paid big $$. Im hoping (when and if all this is over with) VW Australia at least do something for all current vw (and vw group cars) owners to restore some confidence!!, after all, we are the only country to my knowledge who get conned with 3 yrs warranty whilst the rest of the world get 5.

                              • Ahh crap my Yeti is clear, no free engine deal for me.

I wouldn't worry about a DSG tune, as they won't be looking for that, and direct DSG tuning doesn't trigger TD1 to my knowledge. The ECU tune is a different story, as it will at least be a factory reflash, and may be a retrofit to adblue exhaust, catalyst and either will likely need a whole new performance tune read / write.
