  • "estimate that this would affect as many as 200,000 cars, some only three or four years old, with some exceptions, including for tradesmen."

A court ordered ban of 200K cars in one city is not just a headline. Maybe you will get the direction of where this is heading from:

"Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centres by 2025, while the mayor of Copenhagen wants to ban new diesel cars from entering the city as soon as next year."

"The ban would affect about a quarter of cars registered in Frankfurt and numerous commuters who live around the city."

The court ruled that Frankfurt must ban from next February diesel cars that meet Euro-4 and older emission standards, and petrol cars that meet Euro-1 and 2 standards, while Euro-5 diesels must be banned from next September.

The city of Hamburg this year voluntarily blocked diesel models that fail to meet the latest Euro-6 emissions standards from using selected trunk roads. Other cities including Aachen, Duesseldorf and Stuttgart, home to Daimler and Porsche (VOWG_p.DE), are also considering bans.

    • And I think you are reading the big numbers of older vehicles that are being affected, and losing sight of the fact that newer vehicles are not. Each to their own.

its no secret that older model diesel engined vehicles pump out noxious gasses in huge amounts. I see this as a good thing to encourage the take up of newer models with cleaner emissions. After all...we ARE talking about the air we need to breathe to survive.

that your opinions may vary doesn’t concern me, i’m responding to a thread with my opinion it’s okay for us to differ.
      Cheers

Am I misinterpreting this because that does not sound like older cars to me.

        • You’re missing the point. They’re also looking to ban older petrol cars too. It’s basically going to force everyone to upgrade the older “polluting” technologies to newer cleaner options.

They already do this in countries like Japan and Singapore. You don’t see an old car on the road in these places. It’s great for the vehicle manufacturers too as it forces people to upgrade.

The old cars end up in places like NZ that allow these into the country.

youre quoting a headline - not actual policy. Until there is implemented policy, it’s kinda hard to know.

              • There is a problem caused by these headlines. In the UK, Land Rover is in trouble and finding it hard to sell their crap, and part of the reason they are putting forward, is that there is a down turn in demand for their diesel power vehicles, which is all of them.

It may only be headlines at this time, but it has an effect on what people think they should be buying and what they should avoid.

                  Your right about the UK

Half UK motorists want diesels gone from the roads

                    No everyone has moved on.

A few people lost their jobs.

VW is still trying to recover financially.
