I understand the idea of horses for courses and that the Golf (in any incarnation) is very different from a front engined, rear wheel drive coupe.
But as car enthusiasts, isn't it always the case that we want to discover something fun/great about new cars? I'd hate to be stuck to a brand and overlook a genuinely great car in the process.
I get that the GTI can be faster than the 86. In the same way my R35 GTR was insanely faster than my friend's Boxster S.
But give yourself a bit of time behind the wheel of the Boxster S, and it becomes quite apparent that Porsche has uncovered a secret formula that makes the car feel like an extension of the driver and not merely a tool for getting from point A to point B. The GTR gets to that same level of involvement only (sadly) at the tracks when you are pushing 9/10ths. The Boxster on the other hand feels fun just going to the shops (though you probably couldn't get much shopping in the boot)
I haven't driven the 86, but if they have even captured 80% of the magic of the Boxster, it's got to be a winner in my books, especially at this price range.
Perhaps because it was a misconception that could be easily cleared up. Besides all cars are compromises in some respects and if this is a deal breaker for some, then perhaps that post could put the car back for consideration.
I don't know how the 1/4 mile figures are derived but having been to a VW Drag day and seeing the Golf R on the strip, 15 second quarter would be an embarrassment.
Admittedly this R had a tune and DSG but a sub 13 second run is pretty standard. There were Stock GTIs doing sub 14s..
If the comparison to a GTI was confusing the introduction of the R moreso.
Shucks and 36C that day .........and then the downside, due to the temps every other car of ours ran the same MPH too
sort of on topic
There's a few turbo kits emerging for the twins now too, high mount and low mount variations (the Castle Hill Guys) and they're making decent gains for a lightweight like this. Still I wouldn't want to be trying get this mod engineered or insured. Down the track I'll be interested to see what we can do with the stock mapping once the map definitions are sorted ........ by the romraider guys (I can't be ar$3d)
