Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Whatever floats your boat...

My WRX with boost mods was the fastest car I have ever owned... grip grip grip, oooo, unwind sphincter...

My VK was much slower, but "funner" to drive (it was predictably tail happy)

My RX5 with 13b mildport was quiiick, but forget corners, it was unpredictably tail happy... that was binary... nothing nothing Whoa nellie, I thought making a car harder would make it better (wasnt a ported 13b to start with) but i liked it less and less the faster and more undrivable it was...

Even though the WRX was great, it is a bit like my current car, all grip and acceleration...

My funnest, best drive ever was in a three door 1982 Opel Corsa SR two door across From Cabrales to Fuente De in the Picos de Europa in the north of spain... my uncle loaned it to me for three months... 1.3 litres in a 775 kilo car on three inch tyres 23 years ago... and it would be lucky to do two minute wakefields... 52kw 102nm ...

If you like it, like it... if you don't don't...

I hate to burst everyones bubble who is saying this car is too slow.

Toyota Australia are understating the speed figures and its actually faster then the GTI which isnt the fastest car around but still fast enough to have some fun

Check out all the OS reviews, most of them that hand it to a decent driver are getting well below the GTI figures.

The 86 is never going to be as fast as the r without some serious $ spent on it but we all agree the GTI is great fun

Congrats to Toyota for living up to their word of affordable sports car

There is some serious keyboard warrior rubbish being spewed in this thread. I take it noone here has driven one of these yet, but a Polo GTI is waaaay better?

And a Tiguan flogging it around a track??

Oh well, I suppose this is a VW forum.

Front engined, rear wheel drive. Gives an enthusiast/new car buyer another option. One way to spend your $30K.

From my experience the above mentioned points are correct.

Yeh, at Lakeside and QR, its still mind-boggling to see how well the tiguan fares on the track. Still can't get over how well the suspension holds up.

I think what people need to realise is that the Toyota 86 adds another drivetrain choice to the $30k-$45k new car bracket. Because, AFAIK there aren't any other front engined, rear drive sport coupes on the road at the moment. IMO if Toyota made this into a BMW-1-series kind of car where a hatch is also available then I believe it would attract more customers from the euro sector. Personally I do not like this car, but that's personal opinion. As someone else mentioned, in the end you will buy the car YOU are happy with and you shouldn't change your mind simply because someone else told you to.

Also as far as a Polo GTI being WAY better, well as an everyday, daily drive I would say yes. For a fun machine I would (reluctantly) say the 86 is better. It all comes down to what you value in a car.

I'll most likely be getting one of these. I'll wait until the BRZ comes out and a bit of the fan boy hype dies down.

I've been following the development of these while I was looking at getting a Polo or Golf Gti and I thought it was going to be over-hyped and overpriced by the time it hit the streets but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Hopefully Toyota/Subaru will be keener to sell this than VW were with the Polo and Golf. Capped price servicing and general reliability have also swayed me.

I will miss the turbo though

So has anyone driven one yet, and has any actual opinions about the car, or are they only going on what they have seen on the net or in a magazine??
