Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • EA113 Cam chain and tensioner

    Hi all,

Has anyone had to change the cam chain and tensioner on their car that has the EA113 motor ? What were the symptoms of a failing chain/tensioner?

Looking at getting mine done as there is a very quiet intermittent chain rattle sort of noise near the hpfp, it's not the cam follower as that has recently been replaced. Getting the timing belt and water pump done so thought why not get that done also.

    Cheers all

Symptoms that you have a failing tensioner or a stretched cam chain will be rattling on that side of the engine. Obviously if the chain gets loose enough that it either comes off the sprokets or snaps then its going to cause the engine to go out of time and cost a lot of money to fix.

If you can hear some noise in that area then its probably something you want to look at getting replaced in the next 6-12 months or so just in case. You say its quiet - so it sounds like there is no need to rush to have this replaced. Also the EA113 is quite a noisy (ticky) engine at idle anyway, blame the direct injection system.

A lot of this wear and tear can be reduced with more regular oil changes. I know people think its great that new cars only need an oil change every 15,000km but in reality this is too long and causes premature wear on timing chains/guides/bearings etc. Obviously when people buy these cars 2nd hand with 80,000-100,000km they face some of these symptoms of too-long service intervals quite quickly.

Yeah, I've already had 2 engines in other cars fail because of not on time maintenance. Luckily this Scirocco I've picked up has full logbook services every 10,000km, including 2 dsg services and cam follower changes. The car idles quite nicely (minus the hpfp ticks haha). But yes, it is pretty quiet, and not a constant noise, comes and goes, and almost disappears when car warms up. Ill see if I can get a video of it and upload here, but might not be able to hear it on video, This is my first car with this engine so it might just be a "normal" noise. I'm also replacing the cam follower this weekend, will see if the noise persists.

Does the PCV make a rattle/tick when it operates?

The N80 EVAP vale does click, on the front of the engine. Follow the pipe from the carbon canister

The PCV should not make any noise if its working correctly. Altough, the PCV's are known to fail on the EA113 engine and when they fail they usually hiss/whistle at idle.

And yes, definitely check the cam follower and replace if necessary. These should be a routine maintenance item, but are not, and when they wear through they will ruin both your intake camshaft and your HPFP - so a very expensive repair for the sake of a $100 part.

I have a DIY on removing the HPFP from when I used to have my Mk6 Golf R if you want to refer to that to check your cam follower - up to step 12 for the cam follower. EA113 2.0TFSI Autotech HPFP Upgrade full DIY guide with pics

I've managed to take a video of the noise, its that other faint rattle you can hear other than the hpfp. Noise comes and goes.

Yeah, looks pretty easy to change the cam follower, and even easier now with that DIY you posted, cheers.
