Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Digital Dash

I noticed on Aliexpress that there are a lot of digital dashes for sale for around the $800 mark with 40 to 50 % off. Has anybody bought one from aliexpress and what are your thoughts on it? Are they any good?

I did look at these for a bit, but after looking at the reviews they look to be just a screen and small PC that reads data from your existing cluster the sits under the digital dash, not sure what the newer MQB cluster ones work but I would think it would be similar.
Some reviews mention poor translation of menus etc.

Seems like a lot of work and no return if you damage the existing cluster with the mod.

I went with the OEM option in the end.

      It depends on the car.
For a Mk6 Golf for example it works quite well.
For B7 Passat it's a mess - no trim for RHD, assistants menus don't work, BT menu doesn't work multiple other issues I pointed out to be addressed at which point the communications ceased.
Pretty standard for this sort of thing unfortunately.
If they open sourced the sw there would be a community which would address all the issues pretty quickly.
