Spare key

Hi. Does anyone know if the non remote spare key that comes with the van can get wet in salt water? I'd like to use mine to lock my vehicle and keep it in my boardies whilst I go for a surf. I don't trust the many hiding spots on the van, nor do I want to spend $60 on a key safe.

I bought a waterproof pouch that I keep my key in while surfing , has a lanyard for around your neck I kept it inside the spring suit in cooler weather and in a Velcro pocket with the lanyard attached to the fly buttons on the shorts . Never had any problems with water totally waterproof .

Where from.. is it the magnetic mount type that u put under a wheel arch?

I was thinking the same thing but i can't find one small enough to fit in my pkt. I'll keep looking.

When we head out, we just lock it to one of the front springs or elsewhere on the that can fit it.

I got mine from a surf shop in Noosa , its a silicone pouch with a snap lock top with a small rotating lock to keep it water tight .

As for that spare key, I *think* it would be OK in salt water but then I also figure that it doesn't really matter too much if you drop the normal car key into the glove box (or somewhere else in the car) then use the spare to lock and unlock the car

The alternative plan is to get a proper plastic surf key cut, but they don't let you start the car anyway so you're still back to leaving the flip key in the car so you might as well just use the spare key for free and who cares too much if you kill it?! (what else are you doing with it anyway?)

Yes, the non remote can get wet, you can even take it diving if you want to as the transponder chip is completely sealed from the elements.

I just found my spare key and it has rusted badly since my last surf at christmas. I think i'll be up for another.
Maybe i'll just get one without a transponder cut so it will just open the doors but not start the car? (is this correct)

I thought the keys were made from brass.
Re spares cut.. i was quoted $38 for a non transponder key aka surf key and $110 for a transponder key at a locky in noosa.

Most house keys are brass but car keys are steel .
