Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T4 AET 2.5 Petrol - Noisy Fuel pump

Recently purchased this 97 model and it turns out the fuel pump is really loud,,,,now not having owned a petrol model before I wasn't sure what the noise was in the cab, until I had a closer listen by putting my ear on the tank, yup fuel pump!
So yeah I figured this needed a service and promptly changed the fuel filter...that was quite old,,,I decided to chop it in half...looks pretty grim eh, well its still buzzing a bit, but not as loud. Also fuel pump relay is hot to the touch.
Performance I think its ok, drives fine and pulls fine...what should I do now?

    1) Do Diagnostics and replace pump preemptively?
    2) I read somewhere reversing the pump polarity to flush it back out sometimes helps? (surely it would suck the crap back up?
    3) Remove pump and sender and have a nosy, clean up, replace hoses etc
    4) Grab another from a wreckers and replace relay as well
    5) Nothing, just drive it till it dies
    6) Something else...

    Thanks everyone

I'd have a spare ready to go.
In my experience, they don't give much warning.

Pumps for these things aren't cheap, if you end up buying the whole unit.

Was around $450 for the last one I did.

The last petrol car I owned was a Mk2 GTI Golf. I knew from other peoples experience from all makes that they can fail quite suddenly. I even considered at one point to carry a spare because of the travelling I did at the time. I also have had experience with a Falcon owned by a girl across our road that I had to rescue because she ran out of fuel. I took my jerry can, poured in some fuel but the car wouldn't start. She phoned the RAA & I waited until the van arrived & he said it was common for pumps to fail if you ran out of fuel.
Reliability is very important to me & most people so no5 would not be an option for me. Think of the worst case scenario, half way up a narrow hill, cold wet night, heavy traffic, drivers behind stressed from a bad day & your pump dies. I drive to Alice Springs regularly & in remote areas I sometimes think, what would happen if I broke down here. It costs at least $4,500 to truck a car from Ayers Rock back to Alice Springs where there will probably be a long wait for a replacement part to arrive.
In my opinion, fix it properly.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

              thanks for the replies

I have a facet lift pump I used on my diesel T4 for a while, its now sitting spare...im wondering if I could utilise this (maybe with pressure regulator?), obvs bypassing the original pump...I know it isn't a proper fix, but this is my second T4 i'm just using till the rego runs out and giving my main beast a chance to have a rest in the week and do some jobs on her (where she has no expenses spared on new OE parts no matter the cost!)
