Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T5 Transmission

First thank you to everyone on the forum that has helped me before.

So I am heading to the city next week and planning a transmission service on my 2008 Multivan.

Is any one on the forum familiar with either West Coast Automatics or Automatic Transmissions R US ?

still not sure which gear oil to use, just pay for peace of mind and use VW oil or go for the alternative Penrite or Fuchs

    Any suggestions ?

Incredibly the van has now done 200 000 km on the original factory oil, to the best of my knowledge the box has never been serviced.

My logic tells me that these infamous transmissions last longer in outback country where 90% of driving is done in top gear ?

Will post results of service to be done next week.

Given that it's been going so well for so long.........it must be tempting to just leave it!

if they're dropping the pan only, it only gets about half the oil out.But it's necessary to drop pan to do filter(a must).
Check what you're getting. The box holds around 7 litres total

Yes opening it up to have a good look and clean and replacing filter and fluid.

Anybody in Perth ever done business with Transmissions R US or West Coast Automatics ?

Any thoughts on which oil to use ?

The auto fluid is around the same money per litre , I think from memory there was around six litres that our local VW put into ours which lead to its self detonation a few days later . Now this was because they did not bother to remove the sump and replace the filter , so $300 plus for fluid and all it did was flush more dirt and debris into the sump where the new fluid mixed with the sludge in the bottom . That in turn blocked the filter totally and the rest as they say was history . Took me two years to finally get VW to admit that they caused the failure , interesting thing was the next auto the DSG was designed to be serviced every sixty thousand kays and guess where the filter is this time ? yep OUTSIDE the box hmm I wonder why .

              Because it's completely different transmission.

Yes I acknowledge that it is a different beast but it does show VW probably knew that it was a blunder with the Tiptronic to Seal it For Life and leave a filter inside to block . But what makes the DSG so different still has fluid which will decay with heat and also lose its viscosity due to heat etc. No matter how much spin people put on the VW autos it was still a dumb idea to make it that way . {Yes I still hold a grudge with VW } even after they made amends .

Wast majority of the tiptronics have the filter inside.

I know it cost you a lot of money to get your A/T fixed in your T5. However, if the dealer would've tell you, when you had done only 45,000km that you should get the oil and the filter changed, what would you tell him? You would probably react similarly as most people in this thread, and if not you, many others would have. http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ml#post1200422
That's why many workshops and mechanics keep quiet when they see that some maintenance intervals aren't right. Who needs to get accused and attacked, right?

                    For God's sake.

We've all been over this with you several times before. 90% of conventional automatic transmissions (yes, that includes the "Tiptronic" in the T5), have the filter inside the sump. There are no conspiracy theories here. Yes, you got the raw end of the deal on a failed transmission, so did a lot of other people. It is not a personal attack on you. These things happen. At some point you will need to accept it, and move on.

I still like the good old days , that's why I am down on modern technology , I can remember my Valiant V8 with a simple three speed auto . That auto could take any thing you cared to throw at it . Coupled to the Fireball 318 engine and me being 18 years old with lots of desire to push the V8 to its limits the auto never gave a moments trouble as it would get serviced every 40000kays they would remove the sump to do adjustments if required , now on a regular basis I would be slamming it into D1 and gently touch the brakes to hold the front discs which would let the back end drop the hugest wheelies around . Lost count of how many sets of tyres I went through in those days with engine being pushed to the redline and even after over 250000kays the auto was still performing like new . No Flaring no "false neutrals "no temperamental gear changes because the new stuff gets "confused " Service the new ones now there"s a joke take $600 hard earned $$ and what do you get a sneaky way of changing fluid with minimal work and connect it to a computer to see whats wrong and probably not be able to fix it with a computer anyway . Sorry Umai definitely no offence to any mechanic on this forum , but in my day there were real mechanics who would pull something apart to fix it . Plus the car makers were not afraid to allow the mechanics to replace a simple part , whereas today they do not trust them to do a simple repair just supply whole components . Can anyone tell me why when a $20 bearing in an aircon compressor fails that you have to buy a whole unit , which then cost the poor punter nearly two grand . Sorry I am never probably going to be "over "it .
