Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. Does anybody know how much it would cost for an auto box rebuild

I've dealt with Gearbox Solutions in Liverpool in the past.

    Would recommend.

Hey - found this old post and was wondering how did you go? I am having a similar issue with an auto gearbox on a 2001 Caravelle and am tossing around the idea of a rebuild or manual conversion

On a T4 I was told back in 2001 that a new one was around $12k but there could be some places who will do it for less , apparently the VW dealer here in Brisbane used to send theirs to a company in Melbourne for rebuilding . Whilst a manual would be cheaper there would need to be some problems with the electronics and then adding another pedal clutch lines and shifter all possible though . Maybe look into buying a write off in manual and swapping out the runnnning gear if not damaged in the front too much , I did this with my sons T4 I converted it from a 2.4 diesel to a 2.5 petrol . Bought one on Ebay with a bid of $3600 picked up the van in Coffs Harbour and drove it back to Brisbane , swapped all the engine and other bits in to sons van and then refitted the diesel stuff into the ebay van did some tidying up with interrior and some small paint jobs and stuck it back on Ebay and got $5500 !

My previous T4 was an auto. & while it was trouble free I do remember to have one rebuilt at the time [pre 2008] was around $6000. I don't remember if that included removal. The company recommended at the time was in Melbourne.

I recently had a auto trans failure on my 2001 t4 and had my car towed to A&B Automatics as they were always considered the experts on repairing these.I was told they no longer repair these as they are getting to old and parts are getting harder to source. The minimum charge for a full recondition used to be about $6000.Luckily I found a gearbox that they had fully reconditioned and installed that in my van but there's always a big question mark as to how long these transmissions will last.

They're very hit and miss at the best of times.

One of the problems in have anything rebuilt is there will probably be parts that have some wear that will be reused, after all it won't be a new box. It also depends how it is treated. After reading about them on Vortex I used to treat mine very gently. They also need regular oil & filter changes + the pan & magnet cleaned. If you intend to do any towing or head up north in the summer a cooler should be fitted.
In fact, one of the rebuilders in the USA won't guarantee their work unless a cooler is fitted.

This goes to the heart of many Europena car makers problems in recognising our climate . You see all these ads on TV and in print with carmakers driving around the deserts in Nevada for just a few weeks at best doing testing , sorry the real world is in our back yard . Six months of the year searing temperatures in the high 30's long distance and hills to boot and these supposed smart engineers think a few weeks will be ok for a test ? I am afraid sometimes overseas car makers use us as their guinea pigs , when they finally realise there is a problem they make another design . Classic example Tiptronic versus DSG Tiptronic no fluid change Sealed for Life . DSG change fluid every 60000 km Tiptronic filter INSIDE the box DSG on the outside . I cannot see how these engineers can ignore how hot it can be and not fit any sort of cooler for the auto , our fluid was burnt black when they rebuilt our Tiptronic so much for Sealed for Life .

I recently used A&B Automotive from Jets post. I was very happy with their workmanship and the price charged. Thanks Jets.
