2008 Transporter td5 ac/alt coupling

Our 2008 duel cab transporter td5 6 speed manual 165000km.
We are getting a high whistling sound when when accelerating ect doe's not do it on idle.
Dealer says its the ac/alt coupling what one i don't know as far as i can see there is two one for ac one for alt.
quoted $800.00 to repair but why the whistling noise what doe's it.
Any theories on this.

At 165,000km, they should have been replaced by now, if a dealer has been doing regular servicing, so double check to find out
if they have or not. If time is not a worry parts can be purchased from Europe at about 1/3rd to 1/2 the cost, then either fit them
yourself if able, or find a reputable mechanic. The noise is usually a mechanical squealing sound, caused by the worn out clutch
coupling.

Is it whistling when revving in neutral as well?
If not, i don't think it's the coupling

how long has it done this?

You sure its not normal turbo whistle, comes in around 1800-2000rpm?

I'm around 150K on mine, alt coupling has about 1mm freeplay.You can check yours yourself, easily enough

(Rebuild) Yes it doe's whistle in neutral and has about 2ml free play. It has been doing this for 6months 4000km.

(Syncrotek) No i do basic service myself, dealer wants $385.00 for oil change "they are dreaming"
We have only had it 18months and done around 18000Km in it, we use it as a back up work vehicle and personal transport at weekends. As i have never come across anything like this before i was not sure. Volkswagen are not the norm as i am finding out.

Continued driving with a faulty freewheel clutch has the potential to damage the compressor or alternator, whichever one is
making noise. The compressor shaft spline damage will mean a replacement compressor. The alternator can also suffer
vibration damage. (Unless the rubber couplings strip before damage happens)

Thanks for that Syncroteck, that was going to be my next question, will now be getting it fixed ASAP.
When dealer quoted $800.00 i am now thinking they mean for the pair, they are about $200.00 ech on Ebay Aust.
Thou i will leave it to Bret our mechanic " Huntingdale Auto Davison st Maddington 6109" i have faith in them.
Once again thank you both for your help it has made my feel better and assured i was not getting dealer bulldust.

Thanks all of you that replied, after close inspection from my mechanic it turns out to be a cracked manifold gasket. So there it is a big misdiagnosis by Southside VW Cannington W.A

Let me put my hand up here and say I learnt this the hard way with my AC compressor.

Haha can I just put my hand up here and say I learned about the crack exhaust manifold the hard way too.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, the only two things that have gone wrong.
