Didn't VW extend the warranty on DSG's to 5 years anyway?
I asked my local dealer if there have been any DSG failures in the T5 yet. They said they had 1 failure. The van was a few days old. It was faulty from new. They just replaced the DSG immediately. No other problems.
I don't think our DSG's are going to be problematic like the tiptronics were/are. If memory serves me correctly, I believe Howard had a tiptronic failure.

Yes correct but lets not open up that can of worms or I will need to start my anger management classes again ! You are right so far no issues so far reported and this bares repeating again lets wait until the first DQ500's in vans hit the 3 year plus mark . I have mentioned on some previous posts that ours has had hiccups twice by failing to engage forward drive but it was only the one time , my mates which was bought 12 months before mine now on 35.000 has some lumpy changes which I highlighted on a previous post . Maybe on second service software may sort that one out .

The DSG in the T5's have already hit the 4 year mark, with the MY10 models. Mine being a MY11 model is hitting the 3 year mark in 6 weeks.
Surely if the mass failures were going to appear, they would have started to appear by now.
(Just to clarify, I am talking about the DQ500's in our T5's.

IN2VWS, I'd look back at the 3 years you have owned it and tally the warranty issues you have had. In addition the DQ500 in the T5 have proven to be reliable so far with very few noted issues.

Provided it is serviced properly (oil and filters) there is no real reason not to have it last 10 years. Also, these can be repaired. The VW dealers' lack of technical skills when it comes to repairing DSG boxes (they just replace the whole thing lol) is not necessarily shared outside. You CAN replace the clutches and you CAN replace the mechatronics WITHOUT replacing the whole box and for far less than what VW will charge you. Possibly investigate these options before you cough up $3500 for a warranty that may not even be sufficient .....

I'd recommend you get a DSG tune on there as it will prolong the life of the clutches (and the whole box) due to way it works and amp up the frequency of DSG oil changes (possibly even figuring out how to do that yourself).

All up, there are risks either way, personally I'd go without the extended warranty if I had no other issues along the way.

The main issues I have had in the 2 years, is the EGR valves. I am on my 3rd one.

I did ask the service department this.....If my egr valve was replaced today under warranty, and if my warranty expires tomorrow, is the egr valve still under warranty. The answer was yes. There is a 2 year warranty on all genuine parts.

Ours is one of the launch stock for the face lifted model, bought in June 2010. I got an extended warranty through my lease company for about $1,000 which sounds about the same as the ones you've been talking about in that it has a limit on the market value of the vehicle for total repair costs.

I've not had an issue with the DSG and we are a shade over 90,000km but have had a couple of things fixed under warrantying including what I think was the EGR valve. Mostly it's been pretty trouble free and the couple of fixes have been done without hassle.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
