Very good information Diesl_vert! And yes, VW quoted me $50 per Litre for the OEM ATF and said I required 8L's. $400 for oil? You gotta be kidding me! Hence the reason to use Penrite DX-VI as recommended by another T5 owner.

The next time I'm down at the shops, I'll see how much Mobil ATF 3309 is and post back .

Funnily enough, ever since I created this thread, the transmission has been much better. Not as good as new, but better than What I experienced at times. Might consider purchasing the Mobil ATF 3309 and doing a complete flush.

I use Penrite in my business and all I know is that Penrite recommends VW G-055-025-A2 spec fluid (they don't have the fluid for VW auto as in T5 and Touareg and for Tiguan auto they say use ATF MHP, but according to VW the Tiguan auto needs the same specs fluid as Touareg. This is telling me that there is something wrong with some oil companies’ recommendations), so for the sake of your transmission, I hope that you know what you're doing. You can always call Mobil Technical help and verify that the fluid you want to buy is still recommended by them.

All this talk of $50 a litre has me puzzled a bit
Had my 2006 auto rebuilt by A&B in Dandenong over twelve months ago
They came highly recommended, and so far auto runs like a dream
Told them I'd bring it back after twelve months for a check and oil change, which by then had done another 55,000 ks
They changed the oil exept for what was left in the converter, checked everything they could and said everything was like new inside
Normally charge $250 for that service, I think they liked my smile and only hit me for 200
I get the impression that place is run under exacting specs, and don't cut corners
So I'm puzzled why the cost others are finding of $50 per litre for the oil
Personally I'd much prefer someone with good experience fiddling with my $$VW$$, cos I'd probably stuff something up
Just find it curious that a specialised auto repair place can keep the oil cost more sane

Frankly, I think any synthetic ATF is better than the OEM/JWS 3309 fluid (which I personally don't hold in a particularly high regard), though whether it is fully compatible with the transmission is another matter.

Wish I knew why transmission manufacturers don't utilise or specify synthetic ATF as first fill. It would certainly be more in keeping with the spirit of "lifetime fill", rather than the overwhelming cynicism it currently generates.

A simple drain and refill typically requires about 3 or 4 litres, as opposed to disassembling the gearbox and torque converter (total capacity is approx. 7 litres). I also doubt such a company would purchase their consumables (e.g. ATF) at retail prices.

So 3 litres of ATF @ $50/L, then add $100 for labour, and you have a total of $250 (less $50 if you have a decent smile).

Just wish them luck, and hope the transmission doesn't pack it in before they sell the vehicle!

Makes for an "interesting" (risky) experience when buying any modern second-hand European car with an electronically-controlled automatic gearbox...

Any chance you can ask them what oil they used and let us all know. If these guys are doing it for a living they should have a good idea on whats required oil wise.

Without sounding negative I would doubt that the company would openly disclose the oil type they use as it may leave them open for someone to claim against them if their tranny was to fail if they used the oil on their reccomendation . I might be wrong , so if they do lets hope its all good .

Probably because they don't consider selling the ATF oil as a profit generating item, but rather a cost component of providing their service. Whoever the manufacturer of the oil is for VW, obviously it is made to their specs, most likely as recommended by the trasnmission manufacturer anyway, however placing that VW logo on the container must involve a massive cost and hence VW need to recoup it. (said with massive elephant-sized tongue in cheek)

Spoke to a number of different people this morning, and most seem to agree Fusch 440 is the ATF oil of choice for both the Multivan/Transporter autos, as well as the Golf

I'm sure it's already been mentioned here somewhere, and I don't know how much it is

That's what was used in my 05 model when I had the auto flushed. Good to hear its what they recommend as that whats I was going to use again when I flush my 09 model.

Hi all, I clarified this with the dealer earlier today, 60K auto service applies to DSG box; no update from VW for earlier the 6 speed auto. I will get my auto fluid checked (sampled) at 60K and either get it serviced then or the 75K service. Cheers, Scott

I spoke to a service manager at a VW dealership last week and he told me that VW are now supplying dealers with special tooling to allow them to service early model T5 autos . Great what about all the mug punters who followed VW,s early speil about "non servicable trannies " and continued to drive them beause the only alternative according to VW is to replace the whole box if it plays up . I am getting more and more peed off about this and and considering taking some action , when you buy these vehicles they tell you that the VW trained dealers are the best place to have your VW looked after and then they just treat you like you have and endless supply of money to replace the box if it fails . I am booking mine in to two different dealers to get a diagnostic report on the trannie these will then be sent to VWAU for them to see what is going on and if proven that the fault is with an internal component and not electrical I am going to start malking some noise , because if the box is "sealed for life" they should be responsible for repairs .!!!!!

They're no different to service than the auto in early MK5 Golfs. The tools are the same. It's just that at the tme, VW (presumably on the advice of AISIN) did not stipulate a service interval for them.

The argument you're presenting, could be used by those that administered the previous incarnation of Vick's Vapour Drops up until the 'New Longer-Lasting' version came out.

You could drag this as far back into past models as you like (There's broken MK3 Golf autos in scrap bins everywhere!). Nothing will change. VW are more interested in what's going on with their current model line-up now. If the transmission has failed due to the quality of the oil, VW will then detirmine whether they will spring for a replacement unit or not.
