"Quote " They're no different to service than the auto in early MK5 Golfs. The tools are the same. It's just that at the tme, VW (presumably on the advice of AISIN) did not stipulate a service interval for them.
Then if this means that if the box fails then responsibility falls to VW to give satisfactory help to an owner like me who believes that because of lack of a service interval chances of a failure are much higher . Its not as if this van has been thrashed the van has been used for much less than it was built for in terms of load carrying etc. There is obviously some component that is failing probably a valve body this part may have been made to fault because of degredation of fluid which VW "at the time would not replace " because VW says its "sealed " for life. I can,t imagine that you would condone a companies policy to just ignore this sort of thing , I believe personally its time to make a serious attempt to get some more positive outcome . Lets face it do all of us have thousands of dollars just laying around to replace components that should not fail because of some design parameter .This problem raised its head when the van had only 80,000 ks I would expect a van that cost over $50,000 to give better reliability , especially when you consider the diesel engine with its 128kw output will be good for over 300,000 plus with out a major rebuild !!!!! I think a car company who make hundreds of millions dollars profit each year could easily give better support to a problem of their making .

Lets go back to the start.

You've had the vehicle's fault diagnosed by the dealer, yes?

No I was just stunned when they told me they would not service the box they did not even suggest that they would run a diagnostic test all they would tell me was that they would only replace the box if it plays up becuase it is "sealed for life". So I did not return to them but in saying that I have since corresponded with VW Australia and they have suggested that I get it diagnosed to see what turns up , I just hope that maybe they will be forced to admit that the service recomendations for australian vans is not suitable as I pointed out apparently VW dealers are now being supplied with the neccesary tooling to service the older ones . What does that tell you ????

If you have the time and money, I don't see why you wouldn't win the case in court. It's very much like Toyota's false advertising in regards to the Prius' fuel economy, which ended up in favour of the Prius owners.

VW are pretty much stating that the T5 Auto box will last for "life". And If it doesn't last for "life" I don't see why you wouldn't win the case in court.

I just had mine flushed with Fuchs ATF 4400. Its got 50k km on and the old ATF oil was dirty. They fitted a new gasket and filter and used about 11lts of oil.

There is a Fuchs distributor next to the mechanics I use, they looked up the recommended oil on a German database system and ATF 4400 was the recommended oil. They also laughed about sealed for life. In their words and my mechanics, sealed for life according to VW is 5 years!

Was there an improvement once you got it flushed? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge you? Just so we know how much we should be getting charged.

No improvement......but there was nothing wrong with mine. I did it as preventative maintenance.

On my T5 (2005 model) when I had it done, there was an improvement.

As for cost it was part of the full service I had done. So not sure of exact hours.
                Approx costs were:
                Filter and Gasket: $130
                ATF Fuchs 4400 10lts: $120
                Labour : approx 1.5 hours @$90/hr
                So all up about $385

They were filled for life previously, but in recent times, VW has introduced a service interval at 60,000klms.

If you're the original owner, and have good service history with the dealership, you may get help from VW.

But where does that leave an owner who has been told it does not need servicing because its sealed for life and has not had a service done on the auto ,and when the owner asks about a problem that is happening all he is told is to buy a new auto .Now you say VW are servicing them is that an admission of reliability problems ??????????????????????????????????????????

Without going into details as I have stated my disgust at this problem many times before on this Forum . My main beef is that when I contacted my local dealer they just trotted out the standard VW line that they had been told to tell customers that the box cannot be serviced as its "Sealed for Life" .And like you said a price I was quoted was around $7000 now any customer would be like myself in one foul swoop VW shat on my confidence in their product and service ability . This is why I havent been back to a VW dealer since , now with more problems surfacing I decided to test VW with a single question of what is Sealed for Life . Now their response was no response , they will not tell you an answer their suggestion was to take it to a VW dealer and have it diagnosed , now this will set me back 2 days of inconvienience as I am getting two dealers report plus the cost of the report . Then I plan to hit VW with the evidence . As you say near $60,000 van with an auto that is failing at only 130,000 kays is not good enough , I would have been much happier if at the first sign of a probelm to have happily paid for a service to sort it out or diagnose it , but to just have VW say sorry no can fix just stinks [end rant] Howard

I too find myself in a similar situation. 07 T5 with 60k and excessive slipping from 2nd to 3rd. I only recently purchased the van from a dealer so it's covered by a 3 month warranty. It's being diagnosed at a tranny specialist today, and i will take the van and diagnosis back to the dealer for suitable repairs. My only drama is that the dealer is not VW. Will be interesting to see how a non VW service centre handles the problem.

Tranny specialist is unsure if it's simply the fluid running low, or if it's something more sinister like the valve body. Will find out this afternoon. Can the valve body be replaced, or does it require a whole new box?

bluefin, a good tranny re builder will generally fit larger American valves, that supposedly last much longer than original
                          I'll see how mine goes.
70,000 ks so far on rebuild and going well

Got the van back and confirmed that the valve body is the culprit, with approx replacement cost of $3k. Won't know for sure if any of the clutches are burnt until the box is pulled apart.

Now starts the fun part of submitting a claim with the non VW dealer.

You wouldn't believe it, but there was another T5 auto parked next to mine at the tranny shop who had lost 4th altogether. He's up for a $6k rebuild.

                            Shame VW, shame!

Okay so its only two vans at the same place it does give me some hope that my rants are not without justification . Howard

Hi Guys - I would like to know how you went with this? Did VW come to the party? as my 2006 T5 TDI auto is sitting in a transmission specialist and not a VW dealer being repaired for the same problem - got quoted around $7500 to put in new box which is not really new but, only recon with new parts. I am going to do some investigating also, as the specialist quoted, that they are failing because of over heating and body of van is to heavy on the engine. Mine only travelled 84000kms no towing nor heavy loads. For the past three years only been myself travelling in it. I purchased mine new in 2006 for $61k and thought I would keep for 10plus years. Now I feel what else will go wrong .. I was told that if I would get towed to a dealer and they replaced the box for me by sending to auto transmission repair specialist it might cost $11k and customer care told me they might cover 10% only --- a big might...Has anyone won the case????Thanks S
