  • T5.2 burr sound?

Hi, we noticed a burr sound coming from the steering only a few days ago. We will be driving down a straight smooth road and then you hear this burr sound, almost like a power steering sound when you over turn the wheel which we don't do BTW.
We have the 2011 T5.2 132kW 4motion with front diff lock optioned in. It's got about 17k on the clock and has had it's 15k service.

At first we thought it might be the traction control but it happens when the road is smooth and there is no obvious lack of traction on the road. Well maybe the Multivan thinks there isn't and is compensating somehow.
Can't feeler hear anything wrong in the steering when we move it.

I looked up the book and can't see anything about power steering issues. Can't even see the power steering fluid in the engine bay or in the book.

Has anyone heard a similar sound from their T5.2?

Not getting a burr sound, but on average (since about May) once a week getting a grating sound from the DSG box when its changing gears. Sounds just like a fluffed manual gear change with the gears grinding due to clutch not in properly. Will have it looked at at the upcoming (1200km to go) 15000km service. DSG flash on the cards I suspect. Not confidence inspiring.

Hi Sharkie I saw an article about how VW engineers worked for 5 years on the DSG box , please dont tell us that after all this development time it still has problems , seems like a ticking time bomb maybe . Howard

Does the burrrr sound occur when turning the steering wheel, or when driving in a straight line?

Yep it occurs when we are driving in a straight line.
My wife has also just informed me that it happened today when she turned the wheel to the right to enter a carpark. Wheel was not at full lock.

We tried the gearbox in manual mode and the gear was holding still and sound still occurred so I hope I have ruled out the gear box.

I'm thinking it is the power steering.
Bugger it happened after the 15k service coz now I'll have to take it in, which I'd rather do than leave it and find out I should have taken it in and gotten it sorted. You know the age old, "if only brought it in when you heard it, now it's going to cost xxxx"

One of the big reasons I'm intending on keeping our van under warranty for as long as possible :S

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

So the other day I'm driving the car (sorry my wife's multivan) and it sounds like its coming more down in the front left wheel area. We're going to take the van down to our mechanic to get it checked out.
Only happened once since Friday so it's not a regular occurance and hasn't happened today and ive been running around in it this morning.

If you have a cover under the engine (plastic tray) make sure it was fitted properly after the service. I had the noises from mine, when the van was 2 years old and it was caused by incorrectly fitted plastic tray, catching the tyre on the side. The tray has locating pin in the middle and it wasn't re-installed properly, which also resulted in broken locating pin.

Thanks for the heads up on the plastic cover under the engine. I checked it out and it looks intact and fitted properly but to be on the safe side we're taking it in to the dealer to get checked out.
I jinxed myself by posting that it had been alright because after that almost every time we moved the wheel we'd hear the burr sound. Seems to come more when we turn to the left.
I'll keep you posted on what the dealership finds.

So we took the van out to the dealer and a service guy came for a run with us and was surprised at the noise, actually almost made him jump.
He does think its the power steering, steering or suspension but the. His never heard the sound before. They'll go away and look I up and speak to VW AUS and Germany to see if it's been noted down before.
He does think its something vibrating and resonating through to the cabin.
Van is booked in on Monday. I'll know more Monday arvo.

Now we're convinced that the sound is caused by vibration as it's only happening when the revs are sitting between 1100 and 1900 RPM. Its what the service guy said it could be.
We will relay this to the service centre on Monday and I hope they find and fix the cause.
Looking forward to getting this sorted out, next adventure on the agenda for the 4motion is a good detail, I've been reading up on the CCP site and I'm really keen to get the van looking sharp. I thought I knew how to wash a car until I started reading up on it...
Tint is also on the agenda. The side shades have been doing wonders but the Multivan would look so much nicer with a dark tint.

So the Multivan went in to the service centre today and came away with a replaced boost pressure valve. Apparently it was causing excessive vibration and transferring the noise through the firewall and into the cabin.
The noise is now gone so I'm happy. Shame a part needed to be replaced already and it's only done 20k. I was wrong in my earlier post on the amount of km's we'd done. I was shocked to see 20k on the clock but then it's our only car so we drive it around a fair bit, we've had it since end of Jan.

They also carried out a 23H8 service campaign. I didn't pick up the car and they didn't tell my wife what is was, she saw it on the paper when she got home. They'd closed by the time I got home so call them tomorrow and ask them what this is.
Can't see anything out there on the net about it. Does anyone know what this is?
