You know, I may start to get a "complex" about this
You're far from alone in questioning my processes...which I doubt will surprise you
Thinking is free though...particularly useful for those with a little time...and no money.
Thanks for all the input...it's appreciated.

    • In the end I need to revise my negative view of the Hankook RA14's - they started to loose grip in the front when starting on inclines especially in the wet after 40,000km - but I was told that's just how commercial vehicles/tyres are - so I kept going with them and was just more careful in the wet - have now done 52,000 and would have gone 55,000 but a flat tyre on xmas day has forced my hand early rather than repairing an almost stuffed tyre. So that's as good as I got from the original Continental VancoContacts that were much more expensive.

So I've decided to go for an off the shelf set of Goodyear Cargo Marathons (not Vector's?) at $155 each. My local tyre place shows little interest in providing Maxxis. I could have waited for a set of Hankook RA18's at $180 each but decided to test out the reported longer life of the Cargo's and hopefully I won't be complaining about the noise or grip. It was $70 extra for a front and rear wheel alignment. I'll report back on the tyres later.

      • After a couple of weeks with the Goodyear Cargo Marathons (not Vector's?) at $155 each in comparison to the Hankook RA14's they replaced;
        - Ride well - notice no difference
        - Are definitely noisier - as in more road noise in the cabin - if they last significantly longer I would be ok with that
        - The grip is not quite as good when new - I can really only comment on this with standing starts on an incline especially when wet - but as all my tyres have got older that grip seems to get worse so I just modify how I drive
So it will depend on how long they last as to whether I would recommend them over my previous tyres - they are fairly cheap - hopefully the road noise does not get worse.

        • Reviving an old thread to ask for opinions on tyres.
The Hankook RA28s (215/65/16C 106/104T LT) on our Caravelle need replacing after 65,000 km's.
What I would like is something quieter that provides a softer ride, but also get good mileage...if there is such an all round tyre!

          I am considering:
          Cargo G26 $159 (typically $180+)
          Continental VancoContact 100 $189 (typically $220+)
          Any other suggestions welcome!

I'm getting conflicting advice from various tyre shops.
Most say the Cargo are longer lasting, and one shop wouldn't even want to sell me the Conti's over the Cargo due to greater wear rate.
Another said the Conti's are a softer ride and quieter ride, and would have similar mileage.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

          • I've probably mentioned this earlier in the thread.

            My first tyres were - Continental VancoContact 205/65 R 16 C 107/105 T
I got 55,000km - probably could have gone 60,000km+ but the front wheels had started spinning at takeoff on inclines and in the wet
They were the best tyres I have had for drive - but not by a long way - and they are expensive down here - was quoted $220 each

            Next I tried - Hankook RA14 205/65R16C 107/105 - $175 each
I got 52,000km but change them early with a puncture and again probably could have got 60,000km
They were close to the Continentals.

This time I went cheaper with - Goodyear Cargo Marathons - $155 each
The ride is probably a bit less but I don't notice any more.
I was told they will be long lasting but still too early to tell.

              • Hi all, I haven't posted for a while. I thought I would update you as the starter of this thread I have been very pleased with the Toyo load rated tires. Very quiet and I have done about 60k on them. Probably could get another 8k to 10k at this stage. Starting to loose a bit of front wheel drive traction in wet take off situations on a hill. Best, Scott

Sadly the H08 pattern has now been discontinued. New Toyo is H19 and its not as deep or as open. But probably more efficient.

The Hankook Vantra RA18 were rubbish. I got two years and less than 50,000 km out of them. Plus they were the worst dirt road tyres so far. Just started in on some Bridgestone Dueler 697 or 679 AT tyres...and they are quieter and with a better load roading.

                  • Cheers Seano. I will take a look at the Bridgestones next tire change. Yes shame about the H08. Hopefully the H19 could also be a viable option.
                    Thanks, Scott

                    • The H08 appears to be still available on a few on line tyre websites and Tyre Power franchises. Scott

The three locals I spoke too checked and found it was unavailable to order in my size and said it was being discontinued. I had the same issue with the Michelin Latitude Cross. Listed but no longer available.

The Bridgestone's have been good thus far. Not noisy, similar fuel economy, better handling. And they aren't as heavy as I thought they might be (had to replace front upper shock bushes).

                        • Thanks for the update Seano. I aim to check out the tyre options in the coming weeks. I may even consider Coopers as I would not mind winning a Mustang! Cheers, Scott

                          • Hope right thread...

Need two new front tyres. I've been quoted $260 for the 215/65 R16C michelin. Fitted and balanced. Two questions - is that a low noise tyre, and do I need the 'C' type tyres - I drive it mostly private, low kms unloaded.

                            many thanks !!

Hi Sarajevo. What sort of van do you have? I have a 2016 T6 SWB. I'm at about 55k and just signed in now to search for tyre suppliers as recommended by the good folk here.

Ever since about 20k, it's really chewed up the outside edge of my front tyres. I took it to the local tyre shop and showed them the issue. They did an alignment, balance and rotation yet my front tyres (previously my rear tyres) outside edge had been chewed up again. My rear tyres (previously front tyres) are in virtually the same condition as when they got rotated there. Is this your issue?

Can anyone recommend a tyre supplier in the Slack Creek (Qld) area?

I'm due for a 60k service soon. Has anyone had any experience in having this issue sorted with VW as a warranty issue?
