Well I'm back for an update - and I've got to say I regret going with the Hankook RA14's.
Was starting to loose grip in the wet at the front when accelerating after 22,000 km - while I probably should have done it sooner - have now rotated front to back- front were well over 50% worn - but now that they're on the back I don't know what I'll get out of the full set?
With the Continentals I didn't notice the loss of grip at the front until 45,000km - but I think I rotated them at some stage before then - and wasn't keeping records at that stage.
So I don't know how long till I start losing grip in the front again but it feels like it will be much less that the 55,000km I got out of the Continental VancoContact's. I'd say I'll only get 40,000 km's out of the Hankooks at the most. So even at $50 per tyre more the Continentals would still have been better value by around 10%.
And I don't feel the Hankooks corner as well as the Continentals either - more roll.
But the straight ride I think is near enough the same.
If they're still available then, I think I will still try the Maxxi's EU103 next time.

Update on my Maxxis vanpro UE-103:

They lasted 90,000km, still had a bit of tread but one got a bit of a bump on it so out they went. I liked them so much I bought another set which have now done about 20,000, aiming for 100,000 this time.

I will buy another set when these expire if they are still available.

Just replaced my Hankook RA26's which have lasted 141,000km and could easily have gone a bit longer. Yes, even I didn't realise they have lasted that long until the store looked up my details. Had a flat going to work today and after experiencing more slipping and sliding after a very long delivery run/towing on Saturday in the country side thought best to pop into a local tyre store. Decided to get 4 new tyres. Chose Hankook Vantra RA18 215/65/16C 109R.

The original spare is the very lowly used Michelin Agilis 51, 7 years old.

All the best to you with yours, but I still remain very disappointed with the RA14's. I might get 40,000km out of them, so I'll need another set before winter. Maybe it's just how I drive it.

If you don't mind my asking, what was the price for the RA16's?

RA18's tyres were $163 each. I may be blind but I couldn't find RA14's as recommended for T5's when using the Hankook tyre selector by vehicle feature.

That's cause they are listed as RV Optimo and nearest size is 205/65R16.

I'll be interested in your experience with the Vantra RA18 because that's what my tyre place has recommended for my T4.

Though I note the Maxxis Malas Vanpro in the 205/65R15C and 215/65R16C sizes with interest given it is listed as a SUV/recreational tyre Maxxis MALAS VANPRO - SUV & Recreational

Thanks for that. I kept looking at the webpage trying to work out what I was missing.
Is the RA26 now discontinued? - and was it also known as Ventus ST?

My local reputedly unaligned tyre place were emphatic that the RA14 was the best value for money tyre for my T5 - I don't think it was the best advice I've received - and followed.

And is the Maxxis Malas also known as the UE-103?

Thanks again to all for the information.

I'll report back after some worthwhile kays. First impressions are no difference in noise and haven't driven in wet weather or pushed hard enough to test grip. The ride may be a touch firmer but I've only travelled 80km so far.

Thanks. I'll give some feedback after some worthwhile driving. Initial impressions are possibly slightly quieter but their new, no wet weather driving yet.
To aSimpleLife, in my case the RA14's 205/65's are not equivalent to the original Michelin Agilis or RA26's I had so unless your van came with 205's as stock I wouldn't have bought them as I hate going skinnier for tyres/load ratings to what was stock.

                    • I have gone with Cargo 205/65 r16 down from the 225/75 r16 I was running. The difference is amazing. Gearing is perfect, with the motor just feeling less loaded and power is now very smooth through the whole rev range. Before I went to the 205s I tried a set of secondhand 215s, I could feel the difference between the two and chose the smaller ones.

                        Hi Tornado,

I also have a slightly used Michelin spare, and I'm thinking of going back to the Michy's now my Bridgestone AT's are almost gone. I'm not doing much off-road now, and I think the Michy's handled a little better (and lasted a little longer). Would you be interested in selling yours, with or without the wheel. I'm living in Mallacoota now, but my son is in Berwick, so pick-up could probably be arranged.
If any-one else has one I'd also be interested, as ideally I'll need another 2.

                        Thanks, Brian

                        • My 2011 Multivan came with Bridgestone R410's from the factory and they only lasted 33,000km's.

I have ordered Goodyear G26 only because they are fitted on my work Falcon which is always loaded to it's limit and managed 56,000 km's before the rears wore out. Reasonably quiet and seem to handle well (If a heavily load Falcon Ute ever handles well). Spent a lot of time on dirt roads with them too.

                          • Well it's about time to replace the Hankook RA14's - after 40,000km.
I was not as happy with them as the Continentals for ride - and got 15,000km less.

So at this stage I think I'll go with the Maxxis EU 103.
Are there any updates on the Maxxis?
                            Or anything better?

                            • I have been quoted for a set of 205/65 R16C;
                              Maxxis EU 103 - $195 each
Goodyear Cargo V2 - $160 each (if I buy right now)
Imperials - $155 each (has anyone heard of them? - it seems everyone has a better option than Maxxis when I ask for them)

Does anyone know if the Goodyear Cargo G26 different to the Cargo V2? - is the V2 actually the Cargo Marathon 2?
I am a bit concerned about the noise reports from this forum on the Cargo's - I'd reckon I'd also be unhappy with that.
Even though it's $35 a tyre more, there seems to be better feedback on the Maxxis here.
Maybe I should also look at the Hankook RA18 or RA23 if they come in 16's?

And with the earlier comments about 215's - should I stay with 205's?

And the front and rear alignment is quoted as $69 - so that must be what I paid last time - also got quoted $65 and $69 elsewhere as I chased the Maxxis.

And regarding when to change tyres - I felt I needed to change because from about late 30k they began to slip when taking off in the wet, especially on an incline - and I am worried about what will happen if I have to brake suddenly in the wet - but I asked my rwc mechanic at last weeks service if they needed to be replaced and he said no - even the tyre place said to me you don't replace them just because they're slipping - that's what vans do they - I've never had a commercial vehicle before - am I being a little to precious and just wasting money?

                              • I just grabbed some 15" RA18's for the T4...quiet as. The GT Radial Maxways they replaced were nearly nude but still effective after almost 80,000 kays. The old Cargo G26 tyres I still had were stripped off their rims...the carcass was heavier and thicker than the Maxways. Read into that what you will...

                                Again...don't over think it.
