Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Another bubble in a Hankook RA23, midtread. That's 3 or so over the years.Maybe 20K on it. Did some recent dirt road driving, some rocks etc, but still, not impressed.
Can't find the receipt or remember where i got it, so it goes back as the spare.

The bank statement is also your proof of purchase, so I’d find the Hankook dealer and get the tyre replaced for free.

      • Have had the hankook dynapro HP 235/55/17 (vw wheels) for about 40,000kms so far and should see another 5-10 out of them.

Looking at going to ATs or HTs next set of tyres for the look. Does anyone know the max you can go on a 2wd on 17s for that bigger look? Without affecting drive train too much? Better to go back to 16s or stay on 17s? Curious of people’s thoughts/experiences
        Looking at probably Coopers

        Cheers

        • I don’t recall what’s the max size, but if only for looks, the 17” will give you better ride, less body roll around the corners.

          • Just replaced the std wheels/tyres with a set of Coopers ATT 235/60/17 on CSA Ranger rims, great improvement in ride and handling, hoping to get the 60,000k's they advertise.

              Nice, how do they look?

              • Yeah, very happy with them, black against the white van, they sit 20mm wider.

                • Travelled up north on some slightly rocky dirt roads recently, 3 punctures over a week (2 Conti's/1 Hankook). My fault, didn't drop pressures and probably going too fast for the conditions.
One Conti destroyed before i realised.

Anyway, replaced two fronts with Goodyear Cargo Vector 2's 215/60/17. Will see how they go. $230 each, fitted

Bummer ... how old/km had they done?

                    • About 25K on the Contis, unsure on the Hankook. Still have one Conti left on the van(25K) and it's not far off the limit, might get to 30K but i doubt it.

                      Update Oct2020
Had a slow leak in the remaining Conti (tubeless plug repair), and as it's nearly done anyway, replaced with a cheap Nankang Toursport 235/55x17 103 for $130 fitted, till i can fit 60 series profiles all round

                      • Gonna throw my two bobs worth in here just for reference to this wanting to run All Terrain tyres.

I fitted Toyo Open Country A/T II LT 245/65r17 on my lifted 4Mo LWB van in November 2016.

I am about to finally replace them after 70,000kms!

I am running them on 17x7.5in rims with a ET+30 offset, no rubbing front or rear.

New tyres are same model Toyo as above but in a wider/taller profile of 265/65r17, why, because I can.

My van is used daily as a work vehicle carrying a constant load over 500kgs, GVM is nearly 2900kgs

Do you know what's the impact of such big tyres have on the gearbox, CV joints etc? Also, is such a big increase in tyre diameter legal in Victoria? AFAIK, Queensland only allows for 50mm diameter increase without engineering.

Long term the wear may increase but going by most modified 4wd's out there I am not concerned, also same goes with the legality of it all. There are plenty of easy targets other than a tradie van with marginally larger tyres to attraction attention.
As for the insurance issue, that is my choice and I assume that risk.

Fair enough. For me, the overall height is my main concern. I like to keep it well under 2.1 meter so that I can go into most car parks. Currently, I might have 40mm clearance. My next set will most likely be Coopers ATT 235/60/R17.
