Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Serpentine tensioner .

Has anyone changed the serpentine belt tensioner on a 2012 T5.1 2.0 turbo , mine is rattling and I thought it was just the bearing in the pulley but sadly not .It seems that the actual spring that holds the tensioner has weakened as it wobbles around when idling . I tried my best to remove the whole tensioner but some sick sod in VW decided to put the head of the bolt in such a awkward position that I was unable to remove it . I even unbolted the air con compressor but still no luck its stuck right up against the block and the only way you could get a socket on it was to remove some huge engine part as it has a bolt blocking the access to the tensioner bolt . Maybe VW have some sort of very long ratchet ring spanner the can be used , any suggestions would be helpful .

Update time , I ended up paying my local VW specialist to do the job . Ok it was expensive as they had to remove Aircon pump and then the whole front engine mount had to be removed just to get a lousy 13mm socket on the tensioner as the bolt was blocked by the mount . They also replaced the serpentine belt as a precaution and the alternator pulley assembly as well as it was worn badly . They also did the 130000kay service as part of the job $1450 was the end bill but was worth it for peace of mind .
