Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It didn't take long before my better half broke one side of the cupholder - see photo attached. Any chance at rescue? Any tips for me before I try and force that metal shaft back into place and break it properly in the process?

    Thanks! Sam

Mine broke at the hinge point about 8 years ago so I made up a thin piece of alloy and used acouple of small screws to hold it in place , still working 8 years on !! I'll take a photo later and repost .

Avoid replacing at all costs because as mentioned it's expensive and time consuming. I replaced mine and found an overseas VW website with detailed instructions on removing and replacing. From memory it involved trim removal starting from the passenger footwell and airbag trim cover on passenger side as well and took a while and many unrepeatable words.

I'll try and find the OS VW forum link unless someone beats me to it.

I should add the drink holder unit I bought from my dealer had the positive and earth wires in reverse to the unit originally in my van, so just check carefully as at first I thought the replacement unit was faulty and my cig. lighter and back-lighting didn't initially work.
I'd also suggest to carefully note how the wiring is routed in the underside of the tray, as it needs to be seated exactly as it was before removing to avoid fouling when you slide the tray shut...so I had a few dramas when replacing.

That a lot of steps to get to that parts, but it's all pretty straight forward unscrewing and removings bit so you should be fine if it comes to that.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
