  • Any other T5.1 owners received recall for Takata airbags

I received an email today from VW stating our Transporter was in dire need of a replacement airbag , I wonder why this was not sent sooner as I was under the impression our van was outside the recall range . Seems VW AU have been somewhat slack in identifying those whose vans are involved . Pretty annoyed !!

    Nope, nothing yet.

My T5GP (and the Cabriolet) are on the list to be done. I've just checked out the VW web page here:
Takata Airbag Recall - Volkswagen Australia

You can put in your VIN and confirm, there is also links on that page to update your contact details as well as a proposed schedule for when the different models will be updated. I've copied that link here if people are interested: https://au.volkswagen.com.au/airbag-...ia%20FINAL.pdf

Looks like QLD, NT and Northern WA go first, then everyone else with older models going first. Again, full details are available in that first link.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

This evening, but I was expecting it. I'd peeked at the government recall list & contacted VW to make sure that they still had my details. There wasn't a net access back when I looked.

My 2008 T5 Multivan is on the list for the Drivers air bag, but no correspondance from VW yet. It does not appear that the passenger or side airbags are affected.

        Regards, Scott

Just to update, I contacted VW and my vehicle is scheduled for about May 19 as I live in Victoria and not in the humid states and territories.
Mine has a 'beta' airbag, and only the inflator will be replaced not the entire bag. Also passenger side, front seats, side and curtain air bags are not part of recall. Scott

I lucked in & one of the local dealers is swapping mine out Monday 6th.

What I love about the whole recall is that these propellant cylinders have been blowing at around 7 years but because the industry han't cared to arrange for quantities to be upgraded quickly enough, manufacturers have had to be dragged kicking & screaming to recall and bugger you & I.

            BTW, mine's a 2007 5, not a 5.1.

Hooray! An 11 year old grenade out; a new grenade in. Maybe in 7 years time they will have a dependable propellant.

Just got a second or third request from VW Australia to respond to their survey on my recent visit to their local agent. The survey severely restricted my capacity to say what I wanted, so I emailed back:

I looked at the survey which doesn't allow me to say what I wanted, to wit that you left me with a Takata hand grenade on my steering column for more than 11 years until dragged kicking and screaming to replace it with a newer hand grenade.

You can't really blame VW for the problem it was after all a Takata problem in the first place , from memeory at the time Takata were struggling to come up with enough new airbags to cover the first ones in the recall from many makes all over the world . Mind you VW sometimes deserve a kick up the bum anyway .

I love the "according to the Australian Government" bit... feels like someone was grumpy at being forced to do a recall

I had mine done today while my van was in for a scheduled service. They informed me yesterday when I dropped it off that it would be part of the service and take about 45 minutes. Midway though today I received the email mentioned above warning me to get it done.... happy to get one vehicle out of the way, our Passat is due next time.

An update that mine is booked in next week. I suggest you contact VW Australia to ensure they have your contact details as that may prompt it getting done earlier particularly if it is older than six years. Scott.

Thinking about it, that's maybe why mine came through within days of contacting them.
