The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. Usually count from the left, where the pulley is.

Thanks, I'll start there (on the left) replace and scan, and repeat if necessary on the other side if the error persists.

So, some background on this misfire.

Have a friend's Polo 85TSI with a misfire. Mechanic told friend its the coilpack. Friend was quoted $900 + labour to replace 3 coilpacks.

I though the price was a bit rich and had 3 spare coilpacks (slightly older revision but still working) so could help friend out.

VCDS scan says its Cylinder 1.
Replaced the coilpack on cyl 1. Still a misfire.
Repeat on 2 and 3, still a misfire.
Replace all 3, still a misfire.
Pulled the 3 sparkplugs out, all very worn and old (probably never been replaced), though the 1 from cyl 1 was slight worse than the other 2.
            Bought 3 new sparkplugs.
Fitted the 3 new plugs and refitted the original coilpacks. No misfire ....

Mechanic was doing a dodgy on my friend ...

Bottom line, unless you do it yourself, pick your mechanic carefully, and do not use a generic mechanic (such as my friend did).

Wow that's crazy, and $900 seems worse than the dealer would be, a set of R8 coilpacks maybe?

I saw a video recently when the car was a write-off because a mechanic said it needed an engine, it turns out it only had low compression because of a broken valve spring, fixed on the car without the head off.

$57 from VW each. Saw some online for ~$35-40, but that needed delivery of up to 2 weeks, needed them today , so all up $160 for 3 new plugs.

From the looks of it, it needs an oil change urgently too, so will be doing that this weekend. I hate it when cars are neglected by their owners .... friends or not.

VW wants $140 per coilpack, so $420 plus labour of perhaps an hour, say $500 all up. For once the stealer is cheaper ....
