Guys, this is a tyre thread, not suspention set up...I know you are just trying to help the guy, but there have been numerous threads done about suspension and relative wheel/tyre combo's in regards to scrubbing. They are all there to find , just refere to the search option. I have never heard of 215/45 R17's scrubbing on the Polo GTI.

Tires for commuting

Hi,

I am looking for a new set of tires for my stock 2006 GTI. Unfortunately, I don't get to spend too much time on the open or curvy roads, and spend a lot of time on poor Sydney city streets.

Can someone please recommend a set of tires that are a reasonable compromise? I do enjoy "spirited" driving as much as I can, but definitely need a compromise so my commuting is not too uncomfortable.

Whats your budget?

4 of or just the front 2?

Can you put the following in order of preference?

- ride comfort
- noise
- handling

Just the front two, I bought the car used and it looks like the previous owner did not rotate. So I'll put the new ones on the back to start and put the slightly worn CCS2 on the front.

As for preference I would say:

1) handling
2) ride
3) noise

but compromise is the most important.

As for budget I have been quoted 278(!) a corner for the CCS2 installed, I'd rather keep it that or below.

If you can spend that much, the Marangonis sound like the way to go from many a review in this thread.

For $110 a corner, I got the Kuhmo 31's

many people like the Michelin PP2's.

Have a read, and dive in.

I've got the Marangoni Zeta Linea in 205/40 R17 and paid $204 per corner fitted and balanced from Jax Tyres.

The late DaveMack had the same tyres in 205/45 R16 and paid $184 per corner fitted and balanced from Jax.

I reckon they are a great tyre all round (great traction, absolutely no road noise at all, comfortable), but not enough to blow me away and be set on buying them again.

I will next be getting either the Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2's, Pirello P Zero Nero or the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx I think, reviews seem to be very impressive for these tyre types for handling as a preference. The tyres previous to my current were the flagship model Toyo Proxes T1-R which I feel were the most dangerous things I've ever had under a car, I got rid of them well before they were bald.

Keep in mind that Continental tyres are one of the most expensive available, so any other brand you look at will most likely be cheaper, but not necessarily poorer quality. I've read several comments on the Continental SC2's (stock Polo GTI tyres) having soft sidewalls which split very easily. This has happened to a few members on this forum.

I've got my heart set on a set of Kumho KU36 semi-slicks but they just don't make them in 205, and I have no idea what the problems (if any) are of fitting 215 tyre on a 6.5" wide rim.

I finally got around to putting my GTI wheels on my Polo TDI a few months back, so I thought I'd feed back about my tyre selection:

Car - MY07 Polo TDI
Rim Size - 16x6.5 (just upgraded from stock 14x6's)
New Tyre - BF Goodrich G-Force Sport ($160/corner at Jax in Fyshwick)
Tyre Size - 205/45/16
Tyre Replaced - Pirelli P6000
Km's On new Tyre - 5000km
Thoughts on New Tyre - It's not a fair comparison to the fairly ordinary Pirelli P6000's I had on 14" rims, but I'm very happy with the Gforce Sport. I was mainly out to get my wheels on the car with decent tyres, but not to break the bank. Much firmer ride (mostly due to lower profile I suspect), and I have a lot more confidence in the Polo's handling abilities now. Have noticed a 10% drop in fuel economy though.

Currently have BF Goodrich G-Force Sports on, the rears are ok though so I'll only be changing the fronts. Is that ok to do?

I don't mind spending a little extra for a better tyre, plus I don't do a lot of driving, so they won't be wasted on commuting or anything, and they'll last a while longer.

Most of the driving I do is to the shops, mate's places, beach (highway).

I don't care about road noise or comfort because I drive with the windows down and want stiffer springs anyway.
