Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • replaced the factory installed battery, which was in the car since Dec '08. it went without warning, and totally flat. had to call a flatbed truck and send to workshop for new battery. replaced with a delkor battery.

first time on a flatbed, so i took a picture, towed from behind. had a good workout wrestling the steering wheel while aligning the car.

          • My drivers seat folding mechanism stopped working around a month back.
After some really good info from End User (photos and little writeup) I had a good idea where to look. Whilst my issue was slightly different it was the same problem. coin lodged in the wrong place, stoping the release mechanism from holding the seat upright.

Freaking happy to resolve that one for free and so quickly

Thanks dude, I owe you one...

            • Anyone interested in getting the ECS 14lb flywheel and VR6 clutch

              Volkswagen Golf IV 1.8T > Drivetrain > Clutch > ES#125 VW Stage 1 Clutch Kit (228mm) With Light Weight Steel ECS 14lbs Flywheel, 225-275hp - ESR198031S1

I am thinking about getting this, thing is it is cheaper with shipping if you get 2 kits at the same time and half the cost

It is $540USD for 1 kit
              Or $934USD for 2 kits

              934 USD is about $870AUD/2 $435
              MODS- TOO MANY

Yeah, but I want to know more about the rattle before I jump in.

                  • at idle there is slight rattle from within the gearbox. the dualmass flywheel is meant to eliminate this rattle. it goes away once the clutch pedal is depressed. its noticable but once you get used to it its not much of an issue. any noise related problems can be fixed with the little round knob on the radio

                      • I finally got around to installing a new stereo, kind of. After finally getting all the harnesses, and finding out that the 12V power needed to be changed to the accessory one, I did some quick messing around, and got it all working. I hope I did the power for the antenna convertor correctly, I hope it enjoys 12V. I'm not 100% sure what the dimmer via the orange wire is for, but it's now connected, so hopefully that does it's job.

Tomorrow morning's job is to actually install it, and combined with the VW OEM pocket, route the cables for my iPod. I'll post a follow up picture or two once thats done.

I also have to say, the OEM pocket has something completely unexpected, but awesome, at the back, there are 3 holes in the top, allowing you to easily route ipod/usb/aux cables into the pocket... AWESOME!

                        EDIT:
                        .... and installed:

                        • I just routed my aux and usb/ipod cable into my glovebox, though the blank plug where German models have the passenger airbag disabling switch.

That's what i was planning to do as well, but upon seeing the premade holes in the pocket, I thought it was a more optimal solution.

                              • Update on my brakes...

You definitely can't use the standard calipers with 312mm discs. Have larger calipers coming during the week from a fellow forum member so no biggie there.

Rear big brake OEM 280mm discs from ECS went on a treat, although had to take off the backing plate. Is that much of a problem?
