Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

        • Front to back tyre swap. Couldn't believe tyre wear from 1 track day. Going to need to get a spare set of rims I think.

Couldn't see anything that is causing my front end knock. A couple of maybes, a bit of wd40, guess we will see.

Spray your sway bar mounts (to the chassis) with WD40 and check your sway bar links. Has solved knocks in both cars.

RE tyres, what are you thinking? I'm all but sold on Yoko A050R, will likely get a few meets from the current semi's before replacing.

            • Yeah I've done the sway bar links/chassis mounts as suggested to me prior.

A pair of semis up front I reckon. A050R get a good wrap, what size were you thinking? I only have 16s at the moment though from what I have read it's a better rim size for semis. I'd have to run a 50 profile though, I think the 17s would results in a similar height sizewall as well.

              • I'll be 215/45/17 in a medium compound, $440 a corner

A 16 inch rim won't fit over the front brakes, though have 2 sets of 17's. Will run the TT rims on the daily tyres and semi's on the Enkei.

What strut tops are you running, could it be them that are rattling? I have kmac tops, there is vertical play on the drivers side, but doesn't make it rattle. I had a knock in the front right, which I thought was due to the tops, but changed the sway bar links to whiteline HD links and the knock is gone.

                • I assume you're referring to your car RE 16s and fitment, won't be an issue for me on stock brakes... I'm thinking 205/50/16 if I was going A050R

Stock strut tops. If it was happening all the time I'd agree, but it only happens once per trip once I go over 20kmh. After that it's fine. My gut says brakes, I have to replace the rotors/pads anyway so we'll see. WD40 didn't fix it.

                  • Correct re the brakes. Mines got Brembo's. Not that I've tried fitting a 16 on... but not much room.

A mate just picked up his A050R's on saturday and we'll be off to queensland raceway this weekend for a general practise event. He's going to give them the first heat cycle in prep for timeattack commencing early Feb. Will be great to see the change in lap times from the AD08R to the A050R. For me, this weekend is a shake down after some work on the car and prep of the season. Will probably just run around on street tyres as it's not a timed event.

That's a certainty . I had to get a new pair of tyres to replace my fronts after the 1st track day.

If your brakes are stock and you don't anticipate doing the BBK, then you can run 15" rims which are cheaper for both rims and semislicks

                          Hoyhoy.

You could go with 225/45/16, but ya need wider rims, they are a control tyre size for some classes.
Just not a common street tyre size.
I like emm in the AO50.

I was planning to go to QR today for general practice, but with the rain started looking at alternatives and got a chance to do happy laps with the Toyota 86 club at QR next weekend. Just want to get some spirited driving in before timeattack and wakefield in March.

Track tyres are Yokohama AO50 = 225/45/16 on 8" rims.
Street tyres are Federals 595'RS = 205/50/16 on stock rims.
