    • I know to pull the cams down careful like Jimmy. Whether that's in line with an official VW procedure I don't know. I made extra sure this time, to pull them down square.

It does look like I caused the damage on the valve though.

The head is back together with a new valve in and I have it back on the block. New head gasket and bolts, cam belt on and cams timed up. I have wound it round half a dozen times, no freaky noises and the marks all line up again.

I'll get it running in the morning and have a mess about with the FT and the Chinese silicon TIPs I bought last week. To see if I can get a more suitable set up.

I also had a 3 inch MAF housing arrive today. The last piece in the tune puzzle!

I'll drop out the running in oil too and refill with some Penrite synthetic.

The engineering shop did the valve for free, so it cost me $100 for the tow and $70 for gasket and bolts. Not a massively expensive screw up in the grand scheme of things..........

        • Scored a goal.

More pictures later. Silicon goodness, communist TIP fitted to FT and I can get the 3 inch MAF in it as well. Not the biggest of diameters but it fits and the car works. The water pipe needs cutting off and re-routing IMO to make it a much better job.

One would agree with one's comment.

I drove around the estate and no tow trucks seen. Did 2 km and only two warnings, petrol and water. The petrol is the same tank that was in when the chuffing belt went.

Rego needs renewing, so not venturing further for the time being.

Good on ya Gav. Just a thought, with RACQ you can join their breakdown service and get towed at the same time, yeah??
                  Keep us posted mate.

You can join RACQ but the tow service requires you already having the membership for 24 hours.

They have a fast-track membership where you basically pay an extra $60 or $100 from memory and it waves the 24 hour processing time.

They only tow you 10km for free, so practically useless really. The tow from the airport would have been several hundred, it's nearly 40km. Imperial towing is who I used. There's 4 guys that usually do Mercedes and have a contract to move QLD Ambulances too.

I have joined RACQ on the spot and paid the extra though. You have to do the maths on the day.

I would have done that Greg but apparently no longer legit to flat tow. I could have pulled it with the S3 or the wagen.
