Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yes mate it is. In for a bit of work. Never really done any KM behind the wheel but had to do 100km in it. Previously, I have only done brief road tests, like after fitting the brakes or low speed running in for the turbo.

I really liked it TBH, not too loud in the cruise or under WOT. Very responsive, a nasty bump on the highway could see you jump 20kmh, if you aren't paying attention LOL.

There's a few good roundabouts near work, which I take pretty quick in the Squib but the Devil can go quicker! Accelerating in the turn didn't cause it to run wide either, it just held it's line perfectly.

Some new things I need to do to the Squib I guess to catch up?

      • Gav, did you paint your mirrors and spoiler??

More pics of Ants car please, haha, joking, resisting the urge to hijack your thread. lol.

If feel the need to change suspension on the new ride I'd be happy to come to an arrangement as we've discussed. I'll let you know in late May once I've done some k's and got some baseline handling stats. Me and my stats hey

Always a pleasure seeing +ve updates on the squib.

        • No objections to hijacking my thread Sean. The mirrors have always been black, I had to fix the passenger one when I got the car, so the paint hides the crack.

The spoiler is a Cup replica and needed painting as it was just gel coat when it arrived. More plasitidip!

Be nice to do some coilovers but I feel these are a touch bouncy on the street for my liking. They ride perfect if the road is smooth, so great on the track. Possibly raising them a touch would help and change the damping?

I recently had a bit of street time in Jasn78s old Polo which had Bilstein and Eibach I think. That was an improvement on my H&R springs, std front, Koni rear shocks for street driving. Buying a pair of Koni's for the front though would be a long way towards getting some coilovers...............

Be nice to have some ARBs too......

          Money, money, money.

Defo got Bilsteins. Thing with Australia, nothing rusts so you can't tell how old they are from looking! Its got a set of semi slicks on but otherwise I don't think there's much changed in 18 months.

              • Report from Nats please Gav,

BTW I had a cheeky drive of this in Goulborn. But ill let Dylan tell you how quick it gets to 200km/h instead!

                • I took the Squib to Sydney for Nats and to watch the sprints at Wakefield. Drove down past Coffs and read a DSG in Hornsby on the way through.

Spent a couple of days milling around CGTI, trying not to be a nuisance. A couple of VCDS scans, DSG reset, Beetle brake light bulb replacement.

My laptop slid off a bench onto the floor, laptop survived because the VCDS cable was plugged in and that's what it landed on. Chuff. Quick trip to Jaycar, new plug purchased and soldered into place. Back in action after 30 minutes.

Tuned a TDI MK5 and DSG on Friday arvo.

Enjoyed the trip down to Goulburn and meet up with Woody and Dylan. A great day at Wakefield and then a trip back to Sydney. There were a few folk out for a rip in the Squib on Saturday, I don't think he disappointed anyone.

Out for some pizza and a catch up with Goodfella on Saturday night.

Up early for the Nats Sunday morning, got there for 7.45.

Scored an unofficial 3rd in the Polo's. The other 2 were in better fettle to be fair

Set off home after Nats and booked into a hotel in Richmond. Went to a wood fired pizza placer called Embers, which I recommend thoroughly. Got chatting with the chef and owner. She had a mk2 TT that had a misbehaving DSG. Nipped back to the hotel for my laptop and VCDS. Carried out a DSG reset, all fixed. Free coffee and gelato.

Trip home via Putty Road through the national park. No reception a bit of a worry, as were the 10km to public phone signs!!

12 hours to get home via Warwick. No missed beats and 6.4 on the consumption meter.

                  • I also had a bit of a rummage around the breaking yard. I have have been planning bigger back brakes for a while. Just before Nats I replaced the front and rear discs on the S3. Fronts were shot really but the backs still had some life in them. So being tight I cleaned them up and cleaned off the rust on the edge.

what I found in the yard was a rear beam from a V5 Bora. Sometime later the calipers and brackets were in the boot and Matt was the proud owner of a K03s.

The turbo is now fitted in a mk4 Golf that came in with a dead wastegate. So Matt still wants another for his Scirocco.

                    Some pictures to come shortly.

                    Calipers get wrinkly

                    And behind the wheel.

                      • Thanks for your help today. I didn't realise how big a 312mm rotor was until it's behind a 16" wheel. Nice.

Now to find time to go over this thread to learn some tricks.

No probs Sean. Only one kind of washer available from Imparts, need to work out if it's the right one. Got them to order some in. I'll pay them if you can nip round and pick them up when I get the call. 300 Cullen ave.

                          • Gav, I'm wondering if the 440cc injectors are causing the full throttle turbo lag evident on gear pulls at my end. In the BS cold weather we've had down here lately it's made the cold start and running issues a little more annoying than usual. Wondering cost PITA factors of replacement?

Having said that, with a hot engine and freezing air the car is a hoot to drive, wrong injectors or otherwise.

Call me on thursday or over the weekend Pete, just en route back to Australia. In Abu Dhabi right now. Mine was actually starting better before I went away.

                              • Not been too busy the last couple of months. I bought and fitted a Whiteline rear arb. Set in the middle, pleasantly happy with the improvement there. Although I am pretty keen to get the coilovers.

Cleaned out a couple of filters, Squib and the S3.
