I have asked this question, there is not an awful lot of info to be found on here providing real detail.

On saying that, this is what I know:

The dump pipe is restrictive. a 2.5" with quality mendrel bends provides enough flow for aprox 180-200 kw (or so I have read). some estimates of 6kw more power.

Hi flow cat is not required and a full exhaust after the dump may only add another few kw.

you mention stage 2, you mean with a bigger turbo? If you are changing the turbo, I would suggest 3" dump, but it depends on the application.

        Break,

Yeah I've heard legal issues running catless in Aussie but in Malaysia there's none (except exhaust noise must not exceed certain decibels).

        Noone,

Stg 2 mapping, still using K03S turbo, just more aggressive maps, bigger injectors and 3.5/4bar fpr. So in that respect, I'm going to try 2.5" downpipe.

If you're happy with mild steel you can get it even cheaper still. $300 for a quality dump pipe is certainly possible, and given enough bargaining you could even squeeze a full turbo back system including a high flow cat for just under $1,000.
Err ... actually .... yes it is ... a quality cat costs more than $300 all by itself, add in some labour at $60/hour (for 3 hours) , quality flex and quality stainless tubing and you'd be looking at well over $600 ....

I was quoted $600 for the hiflo cat by itself and that's from 2 exhaust place down here. If I can find someone who can do a 2.5' full system for about $1500 with a hiflo cat I'd jump on it.

The 3 inch system I had on my A3 was $1600. A downpipe would be around half the cost on it's own.

I don't see anywhere doing one for $500, except for a mate.

but what about all the peeps on here who've alluded to getting custom 2.5inch mandrel dumps for $500 or less? i can recall a few folks saying they got theirs for between $350-$450...

jmac- i cant be too sure who it was- maybe whubbsie or noone? if anyone wants to pipe up it'll help as i could swear i've seen people come in under 500 (dump pipe only).

i think someone may have alluded to muffler man in melbourne, and getting away for less than that with mild steel.

empty post, i know, but it was a while ago and i swear i swear i swear (for the custom-made non-apr-or-milltek boys).

I'll happily pipe up (boom, tish!)

First, I had a flow test done on the stock system. This found that the most restrictive part of the exhaust is from the turbo to the cat, ie, around the bend. Based on this, my fabricator built a 3" pipe from turbo to cat, and retained the stock cat, which flows fine for the KO3. This gave me a good additional 12KwATW, as measured on two dynos. It cost me well less than $600. I posted a thread on this a couple of years ago. I can't imagine prices will have moved much further in that time. The fabricator has a great reputation in Canberra and used quality steel (not stainless though, unnecessary)

                          Read all about it!

yeah i quite enjoyed the 3'' or not to 3'' thread. cheers timbo! this is pretty much what i'll be looking at doing- cant decide between 2.5'' and 3'', but either way, that, and mufflerectomotomy.

                              cheers!

just the dump. I had my muffler tips changed a while back, but thats just for looks.

Sounds like CC. I may go down that path myself, I believe you need the Seat intake / pod filter to do this, also the TIP and FMIC are recomended... From memory.

I was reading on the Autospeed website about getting a 2nd hand one from a XR6T or something similar. Free flowing design and a fraction of the cost of a new hiflow one (assuming it fits).
