  • thanks mate, I thought it was you that had gone through this before and was going to send a PM. Will be going with koni inserts in the next couple of months so hopefully will be the first and last time these are changed in my ownership.

    • when I had new suspension installed, they replaced the broken ones. Managed to brake one of the replacement ones as well within about 100kms.

Don't know why, could have been due to the wheel alignment not being done soon enough? What can you do...

Problem: knocking from front end for last couple of thousand kms when at low speed, 1st, 2nd gear.
Resolve: local VW dealership took a look, identified the strut top mounts and bearings had worn. Ordered the parts, few weeks later all fixed under warranty, no questions or complaints. The front end now feels much tighter, wheel alignment leaves room for improvement but have only driven 5kms down the highway so far so may have to ask that that be sorted.

I don't want to have to pay for it if they wear out in another 27000, can't be a cheap exercise. Anyone had experience with these things prematurely wearing??
I have standard suspension, however have had right strut top mount and bearings replaced at about 20K and again had both strut tops and bearings replaced recently at 55K due to knocking from front end (though it sounded more like a broken gear box/engine mount) and 'clicking' when turning steering wheel. recently.

2005 VW Polo exhaust systems fault light !!

          Model: 05 Polo Match manual
          KMs: 53,000

Hi all, I've got a 05 model Polo Match 1.4 manual, 53K so far it has been a good mate till tonight

I started the car from garage @ 8:30pm tonite, ready to heading to shopping centre, drove out for about 100m then felt the engine has less power and car was shaking a bit, noticed the exhaust systems warning light came up !!

stopped at a street nearby, got off the car, can hear the exhaust pipe was making sounds like motorbike....I didn't go any further, went straight back...

guys, any idea what could cause the exhaust systems warning sign and what had happened to my Polo as I described???

          thanks heaps

          • Have you tried turning the car off and on a couple of times? With the subaru's, they were known to throw an engine light but once the car was turned off and on 5 times it reset. Obviously if it didn't reset there was something wrong. No idea if th VW's have such a set up. I would suggest turning on and off a few times to see of it resets. My car played silly buggers the other night with a low coolant level warning light. Checked the coolant, added barely a mouthful equivelent of water and it's been happy since. Was barely on the low level.

            • What you can hear is likely a section of the exhaust come free before your exhaust sensor. The sensor is not recieving the flow / heat it is expecting, thus the code.

I'd take it to an exhuast shop, or jack it up and see if you can isolate where the sound is coming from (on stands for safety).

              • Hi guys, wondering if you shed some light on this.

I have a Polo Gti 06 model and when I touch the brakes a tick sound is heard, sounds like a relay switch or something going off inside the dash. It happens every time I press/touch it.

Any idea what this little annoyance could be? I did a quick google search and someone mentioned an ABS fault.

Nothing wrong with it, the same on all cars. You might find it annoying, but it's the way it is. I believe it is some kind of relay.

There is also a clicking with the wipers.

                  • The relay for the brake lights is under the dash. Think mine has done this since day 1.

No problems, but if you are feeling keen, prob not too difficult to swap out if you have any electrical capacity (sorry, had to...)

                      • Little late posting, BUT I had replaced under warranty, a stereo that has gone funky in the heat and was displaying strange characters,
and a Dash/instruments were replaced, as the Dealer had cleaned it with something abrasive and when the sunlight got onto it on the right angle you couldn't see through it!.
Dealer was Geelong, and I was very impressed with not only their drop off service, but that the workmanship has not resulted in any rattles or any other issues!

                        Cheers DCN

The rear control arm bushes are a very common problem, and for most people these are absolutely gooooone by 20-25k on the clock.

Seeing you're in Brisbane, hit up Jmac (PM him) and he will be able to sort you out with a set of upgraded bushes for a great price (it's where I got mine done)

thats crazy man! is this a turbo thing? they quoted me $360 to fix which i guess wasnt to bad, but dealership still waiting on special tools comn from sydney to fix it. Have already had to replace brake pads and rotors, but dealership wouldnt fit them cos i have spacers on front mag wheels, and some c**k head siliconed them on to the hub. grrrrrrr. have had a certain bob jane screw the thread inside my right drivers hub and instead of gettin me a new one they got someone to helicoil 4 out of the 5 threads, then they put bent wheel nuts back in the hub and vw dealership replaced the 5 wheel nuts at no charge (tears seemed to help) cos they told me i would have to tow my car. so i have a new set of rotors in the bak of my car cos i dont want to fork out the money for a new hub and to fit it as well as the rotors. my uncle fitted the pads but couldnt put the rotors on cos the helicoils went through the rotors as well. i seem to think cos im a female they f****n screwed me......

                              • Go see Jimmy (Jmac), he'll sort you out properly.

I'm struggling to see why you're saying the car is breaking though. There's been bad workmanship on it RE the brakes/hubs so VW can't be to blame for that. Control arm bushes are unfortunate, but consistent with many other owners, including myself which have been changed at 30k. Strut top bushes are also known to wear out at a similar interval.

Why are you going to the dealer? you'll be paying twice the price as you would elsewhere. But in saying that, you can't expect the dealer to touch the car if it's not roadworthy (spacers).

Chin up, see Jimmy, get it sorted and keep on trucking.
