  • Does your APR car surge??

    Hi,

I have a GTI Polo, APR v2, APR downpipe and cat, SEAT intake, BMC filter, APR diverter valve

If I put the boot in in first and second gear the car is fine... Under moderate acceleration the car is fine but I have noticed that in 3rd gear...

At about 70km/h flat out throttle to redline the car is all over the place.

It sort of starts revving, seems like it hits a little flat spot then feels like it pulls again, then it backs out, then it comes on again. its not on off but you can just feel the power come on and off... ite really weird..

Can someone go wide open throttle in 3rd gear from about 70km/h and let me know if its smooth or its a little rubbery?

Ill try it tomorrow with the stock tune and see how it behaves..

Absolutely no problems with mine - smooth & consistent acceleration curve in gears 1-4 all the way to redline (haven't tried 5th to the top). This was the same with both the v1 and v2 software.

Ill compare it today against the stock tune.. see how smooth it runs...

Its weird as no probs in 1st and 2nd gear..

its only wide open throttle in 3rd gear from about 70km/h to 130km/h. it feels like its pulling, then eases out and pulls again and eases out and pulls again..

      almost like a flat spot..

Any ideas what this symtom may be?? fuel delivery? torque tables? boost leak? kinked intake hose?

I think you will find that that is the range where it starts to struggle for air (through the stock air box) - the car makes a load adjustment on the fly, but it sounds exactly as you describe.

It almost impossible to replicate on the dyno. Most of the cars with better intake (pipe & intake) don't seem to see the same thing - saying that, not all of them do it!

          Hmmmm.

It sort of feels like under wide open throttle, like it must suck the intake tubes in and it momentarily has a problem breathing and then it gets some air and then it gets a little funny again...

Ill check all my intake to make sure its not kinked or anything..

I have a BMC filter and SEAT intake?

how come It doesnt happen in 1st or second gear??

Turbo intake pipe could be collapsing causing a restriction.

I also have the Forge TIP and have never seen this .....

Also, in 1st and 2nd gear boost is limited slightly by the ECU. In 3rd gear you get it all ....

I am running a boost guage and there is at least .3 -.4 bar difference between 1s, 2nd and 3rd gears.

I have a TIP, but standard filter, and have experienced this.

                    Might be a v2 thing??

My V1 goes all the way everytime. But it is on a cheap gauge. lol.

I'm still running V1. In 1st and 2nd gear I get boost peaks of 1.1-1.2bar depending on the fuel I'm running. It settles down to about .95

In 3rd gear (and 4th and 5th) it peaks at 1.4 bar and then drops to about 1bar.

It might be that the extra boost in 3rd+ will suck the std TIP closed at peak boost. There is a reason Forge, APR and others have developed TIPs to handle high boost.....

I remember Guy telling me a while ago that their K04 Polo really stuggled getting enough air into the turbo and that a very good intake system is a must. (TIP, filter and airbox + feed)

Ive checked all the hoses and they seem fine..

Went back out on the expressway, 70km/h to 120km/h and it still does this surging thing...

Not sure if its the pipe to the turbo.. I previously had V1 software and didnt experience this problem... since the V2 software and downpipe being fitted, my 80-120km/h times seem a little off...

My APR V.1 80-100km/h was pretty strong.

i have V2 and i don't have this problem, my 80-100km/h times still kick a$$. APR V2 and a BOV are the only engine mods i have.

3rd gear in my car seriously sux.. Could it be the wastegate opening and closing and opening??? it feels strong, backs away, comes back again and goes away.. its only between 3000-5000rpm..

Someone tell me how to fix this... PLEASE
