  • Front rotor replacement issues. 8/2010 77TSI

    Hi All.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same or has any advice. As we live on Tamborine Mountain, we get a fair bit of brake temp driving to and from work etc... i.e up and down. Ive ended with the usual warped brake rotors on the front and have started looking for replacements. As a trade qual mech myself it isnt an issue but I found the following.

All brake catalogues show either 256mm or 288mm rotors. Whats actually fitted is 239mm rotors. I've looked towards europe for replacements and it seems 239mm rotors on my 6R were actually fitted on the 6N-1.

Im not going to fit OEM or cheap after-market. I'll bring in or buy locally if possible Brembo Max or sport replacement rotors and either Brembo or EBC pads.

Has anyone found the same or done a rotor replacement with a decent quality brand?

    Cheers Dan

I'd recommend brands like ATE, or Textar, for both pads and rotors.

You can source them through HSY and Imparts locally.

Brakes Direct up in QLD have a great range and well priced too. Send them your VIN and they will tell you what choices you have.

Interesting because my front rotors are warped as well- I've been happy to put up with it until they need replacing *shrugs*. Is this a common problem on these cars?

Yeah, for some reason warping on the base model brake package is quite common.

This astounds me given that they uprated the brakes on the TDi from 256mm to 288mm, even though the 6R TDi was a lot less powerful and probably lighter than the 9N3 version.

No wonder warping is an issue with such small rotors on the 77 TSi but then it all helps with fuel economy and acceleration.

I would also recommend contacting Brakes Direct/GSL RallySport - I have found them to be extremely helpful and knowledgable. I have bought DBA rotors and QFM and Remsa pads from them and they have been better than the OEM parts IMO (longer lasting, better performance on track days but maybe a bit less initial bite).

We've got a TDI and its on its second pair of front rotors after the originals warped. The new ones have only been on for about 30,000km and are already starting to shudder.

I've never had the 256mm DBA rotors warp, either, despite getting them red hot on several track days
                  See here and also here

The stock 288mm rotors I've fitted as an upgrade seem to be warping though (and no track work on these so far). They'll be replace with DBA's if they get worse

Ive read quite a few posts on this happening on Polo's so maybe its an issue with heat dissipation and dis size?

I have actually followed Umai Naa's advice and bought ATE rotors and ceramic pads for my CC... They have been great performance wise, low noise and dust... If you buy them together you will get 3 year/50000 KM warranty...
I bought them directly from HSY Artarmon.
                        Good luck

Just so I'm not preaching the "disc don't warp" message:

Doesn't mean this standard discs aren't crap, though I'd be leaning towards pads being equally crap causing your grief.

I am a believer that warped rotors is not very common at all, and usually something else is at play.
I had ECB pads which deposited material on the rotors and made it shudder. I had to remove and lightly sand the rotors to clean it up and they were fine a gain for 20,000km or so. Also found a rotor was not seated very well after a tyre rotation, the little screw had broken off. The back of the rotor had a bit of rust too, so a clean out and some light grease fixed that for many km too.
The bmc pads eventually failed, came off the backing plate and had to be replaced, under warranty too after 6 years.

If your brakes are fading then maybe some slotted or cross drilled rotors would help, also change the brake fluid more often as once the fluid heats up it looses it efficiency.
I too would recommend GSL Rallysport/Brakes Direct, tell them your issues and I'm sure they will have a recommended pad and rotor combo suited to the hills.

I thought my car was abnormal warping at 60,000km.. Or I was braking too hard.

Sort of good to see other people have this issue.

Sort of a bummer though cause I still have 75% of my pads left on the front, and if i get the rotors machined I'll have to do the pads too
