It comes down to whatever is in the bins at the wheel assembly station, that's it.

I didn't mind the sp sport maxx on the car from factory, I got 42,000kms out of them and they held their own grip wise plenty well most of the time, especially early in their life and I'm not one to take corners lightly, I can assure you

I've been running the re002 for 7000km now and they grip plenty well, are much quieter than the dunlops and have better wet weather grip, however it's no unless I'm really pushing that I get any steering feel with them and in the wet, well, a Daytona machine at timezone has more steering feel! Spoke to Bridgestone about it and they're at a loss as to why...

The contisport contact 3 is good but its a 3+ year old design / build, I'd look at the new contisportcontact 5 and contimaxcontact 5.

Despite you not looking at this brand...steer clear of Pirelli...chewing gum quality tyres.
What's wrong with the Pirelli's? I just ordered a pair of P Zeros, looked all right to me. Good tread pattern and pretty good reviews. Don't know how they will stack up against my Michelin Pilot Sports though...shame I can get them in this country.

My brother has P Zeros on his car...and during warm days...they're extremely soft and loose into tight corners. As well as picking up every piece of road debris due to its softness (small pieces of gravel, small thumb nail - nail was bent...but sitting in the rubber lol)...oh and the road noise is horrible >.<

He obviously has the Super Softs. Get him to get them changed during his next pit stop for the White banded Mediums!.

Oh! we got a smart one here problem is with the fear of delaminations he's better off letting the FIA do all the fighting for him

I just had The P Zero Neros fitted yesterday haha. Initial impression is they're not that bad for noise, no difference compared to the Dunlop SportMaxx
The Dunlops were also terrible for picking up road debris. Wanted the Bridgestone RE002 but no stock in the country

Had the Brigestone Potenza S001's fitted today. Initial impressions are good! Nowhere near the tyre squeal the Sportmaxxs we're giving me, just a little chirp on a spirited takeoff. Going over the Taren Point Bridge they sounded very loud, but then I didn't notice it again. Liking the, so far.

Howdy All. Found a lump in the side wall of my front right tyre this weekend. Thinking it's going to need to be replaced.

Any suggestions on where I should go and what brand? I don't want to spend big coin as the car will be going sooner rather than later so don't want to pile unnecessary cash into it.

                  Cheers

I got Kumho KU39 on my 9N GTI. Not quite as good as the Michelin PP2 on it before... but for $135 a pop they fight way above the price point. They give very good wet weather response. Got them through Tempe Tyres.

                      Thread revival!

I'm up for my third set of tyres (100,000km) First set was the sport pack polo 215/40R17 Conti standards, second set were Kuhmo KU39's.. Semi impressed, quieter and more grippy than Conti's but didn't last as long (20,000km less).

Are there any negatives to using a 215/45R17 tyre with 17x7 et42 enkei alloys? (same specs as Boavistas)

According the calculations done previously in the thread, there will be a speedo change, and i'm aware of that, my speedo is currently 6km/h more than actual and it will raise the height of the car by 11mm (easier to get the jack under the bloody plastic front IMO.)

                      Cheers,
                      Luke.

I'm prepared to get some more crap from my tyre choice as I do every time I mention it. I'm running Goodride 215/45R17. While I drive like a grandpa 90% of the time I have my favourite freeway on/off ramps and roundabouts that get taken on the limit. I got 50K out of the original continentals worn completely to the wear indicators and a bit more. I'm now 27K into the Goodride and they appear to be about 50%. At half the cost, I'm already ahead on value for money. I havent exactly measured it electronically but the tyre noise was no worse. The grip may have been ever so slightly less. At this years Club VW Supersprint they performed very good. I'm told they are dangerous, but I didnt crash, didnt spin. And I was well off the bottom of the timesheet despite having the smallest engine. I was getting quicker each run but only had 3 goes because I was supposed to be running the event, not driving. I later found that tyre pressures were way low, so probably could have went a bit quicker.

I will go goodride again but I wont go the 45 series. They fixed the speedo error perfectly but I can notice the change in gearing. Not so much in first but 2nd and 3rd for sure. Mt Ousley is my dyno. Where before I could get up in 6th gear (with an empty car and a struggle) its out of the question now.

What gear is irrelevant, it's the speed comparison that matters.

                            Hey Amazeer,

                            Just on the above;

                            1. Were you told why your choice was dangerous? ie. Brand choice or the move from 40 to 45?

                            2. When you say, gearing, do you believe that your Pogo is less powerful or you feel as if the ratio is stretched?

Let's not talk about the speedo here, I'm more concerned about the driveability pro's and con's.

                            Cheers

A 215/45/17 is around 3.5% (10mm) larger in radius than 215/40/17, which is bit more than the difference in radius between a brand new 215/45/17 and a just legal 215/45/17 (8.5mm tread depth new versus 1.5 mm legal depth). If there was any difference in acceleration caused by the larger diameter and hence taller gearing, then it would disappear as the tyres wear. A noticeable difference in acceleration as a result of such a small difference in gearing is unlikely, more likely is the increased weight of the tyres (like having to accelerate 4 heavier flywheels). Without the actual weight differences it's hard to quantify, but I suspect that it would also be unnoticeable.

In a race car a 5% change in the diff ratio (eg; 4.7 to 1 to 4.9 to 1) is barely detectable in the logged longitudinal G force and my experience has been very few drivers actually report feeling any change in acceleration. What they can pick very reliably is a change in track position where they change up/down a gear. A 5% change in diff ratio can alter a gear change point by many metres. But it may or may not change the road speed at that point.

                              Cheers

People with zero personal experience saying that because they're cheap they're crap. I'm not saying that they will out grip and out wear every tyre on the market, just that they go close at half the price of the original continental.

I think there's a drop in acceleration which makes you wind out the gears a little more than you normally would. I don't think about it now but I remember feeling that way when I first put them on.
