    Hey guys,

Just contemplating changing tyres as my conti's are at its half life (2 tyres have been plugged before due to nails).

I've been looking at the continentals MC5 in a 215/45r17....problem is I'm currently running 215/40r17....My car isn't lowered and I'm not thinking of doing so...however would it be compliant/road worthy or illegal?

As well as how much would it throw the tacho out?

    Kind Regards,

    Chris

Should be possible. The total change of height will only be 22mm (2.2cm) so it will fit well within the guards but it will show you speed at 4% less than what you are doing.

So at a GPS speed of 100 you are going 96 on your speedo. Spin that around you doing 100 by your speedo means you are doing 104 - 4 over the limit. This also depends on how far your speedo is out normally (I think most vw cars show 100 when its a GPS 96) so you might get away with it.

im running 215/45s r17 and my car is lowered considerably so you will have no problems with clearance. its not ideal though. im gonna be changing wheels soon so im definatly going for smaller tires. id stick with the 215/40s if i was you

My problem with the 215/40's is a lack of choice and currently I have a choice of only 2 tyres for the price i'm willing to pay:

        Kumho KU39's

SP Sport Maxx (all Dunlop SP Sport Maxx are discontinued as of the end of this month).

Where as ideally the Max Contact 5 from continental are my favourite

If you're talking height of the car with the tyres installed, then its only 11mm higher. The guards will not be filled by 22mm more.

          The overall diameter of a 215/45 (626mm) is 22mm more than a 215/40 @ 604mm.

Well at this point in time...I either go a 205/40 (but the wheel is 7.5 inches wide and is already stretching the rubber slightly.

            215/40's...pita (pain in the ass)...

Stumped for choice and if I go 215/45...I basically increase my speed which = non complianct/more fines?

The regulations limit changes in overall diameter to +/- 15 mm.

              215/40 R17 = 604 mm
              215/45 R17 = 626 mm (+3.6% difference in speedo readout)

You are well covered in terms of safety, as a 215/45 R17 has load index of 87 (standard load) or 91 (extra load).

If you want to keep within the regulations, you can fit 205/45 R17 88V XL tyres (616 mm).

205/45 (614-616mm) is a better size, with more sidewall and will fit fine on the 7.5 inch.

I have the Goodyear Directional 5's on my 17's in 215/40/17 and I agree, there are just a very few tyres that are available in that size.. the D5's I have found to be pretty good so far, cant complain...

Conti's are the best from my experience but are just UBER $$$... the sport maxx's I had on the golf GTI and are good until they start to wear then they can get a bit noisy, but tyres are one of those things, for everyone who loves them, there is someone who hates them
My Car(s): 2011 6R TSI Comfortline (Pepper Silver),
If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)

                    215/45/r17 in the MC5 Continentals at $145 a corner...cheap cheap.

Got quoted for Dunlop SP Sport Maxx in 205/45/17 for $155 per corner....decisions decisions

also the Kumho KU39 in 215/40/r17 I can get for $140 per corner....hmmm

                      RE002 - 21540R17 - BRIDGESTONE > Tyres | Kmart Tyre & Auto Service

what about the adrenalin 002's from bridgestone? I haven't personally tried this variant (nearly all other performance versions though) but i have heard very good things about them.

I looked at them however for $280 per corner...I'd be safer with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 for $265

Its hard to find good 215/40r17 tyres especially under $225 >.< My brothers GTI is being decked in Pirelli P-Zeros for $220!

Yeah mate, ring up Costco...they sell Pilot Sport 3's and if you ask nicely they might do a free nitrogen fill on all 4 tyres

Edit: So Dunlop SP Sport Maxx in 205/45zr17 88W would be a safe choice for my 17x7.5 Talladegas? I've been thinking...$155 per tyre is dirt cheap right?

E.G Loss of grip due to the reduction of pavement contact, 2% speedo isn't too bad I guess?

Thank you so far for your assistance guys!

But the quote you got for the Kumho KU39 is cheaper still ($140 per tyre) and it's the same size as the OEM fitment.
