You go to VicRoads, explain your situation, and apply for an exemption.

I'll try, though the golf gti will be registered in my brothers name cause the golf mk4 is under my name because it was mine but then i sold it to him....but ill try to figure it out.

Yes, it really is quite an incredible engine when you consider the size and even the "on-paper" specs. Before buying my 77TSI last year, I test drove a large number of competing cars - most in the light class but a few in the small class. I test drove amongst others the Hyundai Accent, Hyundai i30 petrol and diesel, Ford Fiesta, Yaris, Corolla, Focus, etc. Yet the 77TSI (manual) went better than all of these, even the Hyundai diesel with it's supposedly excellent power and torque.

Although I have never driven any true "high performance" cars, I have driven quite a few "good" performing cars, including a Ford XR5 Turbo, the 1.9 litre Peugeot 205 GTI and course a number of Falcons and Commodores for work purposes. I can honestly say that even comparing the little 77TSI to the XR5 turbo (which is the best performing car I have driven), you only really notice the difference if you flatten the foot to the floor and take it over 5,000 RPM.

In real world driving the 77TSI has been a massive upgrade over my old Mazda 2 and certainly goes far better than my mother's 1.5 litre Yaris. As an example, there is a long, steep freeway hill heading south of Sydney just before the Mittagong turn-off. In my old Mazda 2, I had to be in 4th gear (engine at around 4,000 RPM) and with the foot near the floor in order to hold the speed at 110 km/h. With the Polo, I can do this hill in 6th (top) gear (around 2200 RPM at 110 km/h) and with light throttle. As I say, you can't even go by the paper specifications with this Polo - the engine is ticking over at just over half the speed of the Mazda 2 and is still pulling far better.

Every time I drive the Polo I am just amazed at the technology of this amazing little engine - it's the smallest capacity car I have owned or driven bar my first car (1985 Charade), yet it goes far better than any car I have ever owned since or any car anyone in the family has owned.

If you've never had day to day experience in the little 77TSI, then the best comparison would be to say it goes about the same (in terms of acceleration and in-gear response) as a Commodore manual from the mid 90s. Pretty amazing considering how tiny that engine is.

And yes - I agree about the aircon too. Only car I have ever owned where the only way you can tell the air is on is because the car is cool. It takes nothing away from the car's performance.

To the OP. 77TSi is pretty good. One of my mates has a 77TSI DSG as his commuter and is very happy with it after we fitted koni shocks & made some VCDS tweaks to the steering weight. His other car is a Lotus Evora & he pedals it quite quickly (as he does the Polo). Sometimes it's about the driver & not the car.

So you will get the tickets your brother gets and he will get the ones you will undoubtedly get.

              Sounds fair I suppose.

Why not just suck it up and buy a car thats legal and not worry about trying to get around it.

Acually I find that with my polo I take a massive performance hit when I have the aircon on. Really have to floor it for it to move. This is for temperatures above 35. Anything lower it still takes a bit of oomph away but still drivable. But this could be because I never drive with it on unless I really need it...so the gearbox has probably adjusted the clutch bite points accordingly.

if its above 35 degrees then the intake charge will be much warmer = air is less dense and it will struggle more than when it is cold

that's why you have an intercooler to cool the pressurised air because both the turbocharger and supercharger operate with a high temperature and the nature of compressing the air will also heat it up.

TLDR; hot air = less power

I really like the look of the Polo and am looking to get one as my first car. I especially like the look of the 3 door version but the issue I'm having is that I feel that the 66kw engine in it will certainly not be adequate enough, especially when taking friends along and so on.

The only other 3 door is the GTI, and it's under the banned list unfortunately. Is there anyway I could possibly get an exemption to drive a polo GTI? Can you try and persuade vicroads? I'm led to believe it has the same 118tsi engine in the golf and the base tiguan as well? ( I think the engine might be the main reason?)

Thanks guys, either way, I wouldn't mind the 5 door 77tsi, perhaps I'll get that stage 1 tune to 100kw that I've been seeing around.
Lucky you live in Vic, you can apply to get a 77TSI, here in NSW the 77TSI is banned for p Platers... Stupid if you ask me

                              Polo GTI on P-Plates

The Polo, along with most of the VW range falls into the restricted category, but most (including the 77TSI) are considered "low powered" turbos so will get an exemption. I don't think they even charge you the application fee... Read the RTA website.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Can't wait until the government finally does what should have done forever ago and introduce power-to-weight restrictions. Outrageous that a P Plater can't drive a 77TSI Polo but can go and flog a V8 around. Pretty soon most new car engines will have turbos I think.
