I got an exemption for a MkV Golf GTI on my Red P's coming from NSW to VIC. All I said was that the car was a gift (was my father's) and was my only car. They asked if any other cars were registered to me or my family and I said a Honda Legend which was my mother's.

It all depends on how you come across and if you can be sincere about it. The only thing that will hurt your changes is the 3-Door, but the Auto will help you out. They asked if mine was a Manual and went on further to tell me I'd be denied instantly if it was.

polo GTI would be a terrible first car, who wants a $30k piece of machinery in the hands of a 17 year old?

grab something cheaper / as safe / as reliable (?) / good on fuel while you are still learning to drive.

because I can nearly guarantee you will smack it at least once. I hit my 9 year old liberty at night in pissing down rain and was completely devastated, I would be in tears if I had done that to a polo GTI!

P.S I am not picking on you directly, this would be to all L-platers/P-platers.

This is a great piece of advise - there is no substitute for hours behind the wheel and maturity!

Agreed...my first car was my camry which I had from time when I had green Ps to now (nearly 7 years) before upgrading to the polo GTi; it wasn't the hooning or other crap which damaged my car (was never my style) but negotiating tight narrow car park corners

That's pretty harsh to say P Platers shouldn't be behind the wheels of new cars. I have had my brand new 25k Polo 77TSI for 2 years now and I haven't had a crash, bump or scrape once and I have done 40,000km and I drive 3 hours every day, so plenty of road time.

As a P Plater I am judged as "bad" driver before I even get in the car, though by the evidence shown before me i would say I and other P platers are better then most other full licenced drivers out there including the c**ts who have hit me so far, my mother in the back and a prick in the side in the carpark!!! Which has happened on two occasions left an right side.

If I could have gotten a GTI without Vicroads having an issue I would have in a heart beat. I just hate people who label any young driver as some bomb on 4 wheels, waiting to go off!

At the same time I can also respect what many people say about young hoons and I am to agree with them. There is a time and place to do stupid things and the public roads are no place for it.

*Shakes my walking stick at you!* haha joking mate , I agree not every P plater should be painted with the same brush, however its not the individual P plater that is the issue most times these days...its usually his silly mates in the back of the car pressuring him/her to do stupid things and because most younger people want to be seen "accepted" they tend to do silly things hence why most people including regretfully the media label P platers as thugs/hoons on our roads.

So once more, Its true not everyone on P's should be labelled/judged however some peoples actions have lead to the greater community to just lazily and simply label P platers as road warriors/thugs.

I agree with that more than anything, peer pressure is a bad thing and makes people do things they know they shouldn't. I like the idea of the red P restricting it to 1 peer passenger but at the same time was annoying when going out with friends. But hey I did my 1 year and am now Green. I then see other red P's cars full of people and get so pissed off, why they think the rule doesn't apply to them I will never know.

The major deterrent for me not to do anything stupid in my car is cost. One of my friends younger brother always wants to do burnouts in my car every time I see him, I just keep telling him "If you want to pay $600 for two new front low profile tyres, sure...I'll do it...also better have a spare $2500 incase I need new DSG clutches". After i say that he understands xD

                  I think you're getting a little defensive nomadx38
I just know that when I had not long got my Ps, I still had a lot to learn. I took a few risks, but the majority were calculated. I understand your plight, I really do, rest assured that us old pricks only wave our sticks because we've seen the possibilities. And for the record, I'm not that old

i'm 24, i've lived in the era of P-plate bashing and I just got slugged with the turbo rule by about 6 months back in 2006/7.

GTI is a different beast to the 77tsi.

we have all been there. the older you are, the more you appreciate cars and what they are capable of and have a bit more respect for them. for the other younger generation in this thread no matter what you are going to drive please go get some driver training! i have done two advanced training courses and several track days and it has paid off on more than one occasion because of idiots on the road.

Cars are expensive, just keeping it on the road is over $1000 a year without even driving it. Honestly you would be better served trying to save your money than spending everything you have on a car that loses value at an incredible rate.
If motorcycles interest you, then a CB400 will blow the doors off a Polo GTI at a fraction of the price.

^ +1 I couldn't agree more, defensive driving courses are a must have! And should be a pre require for the P's. The first step of driving is knowing the car and what it can do, its limits and how to control it past those limits. That way when the time comes you will know how to do a maneuver accurately, safely and most of all in control.

I've done bikes before, my knee still aches. I love my 4 wheels, at least I know that if one hits a patch of loose road I won't spin out...
