    Re 3):

Just re-read the first page, and michaelrobinson explained in post #38 what the 2 buttons do:
One enables voice control/command of the Mobile Preparation plus, and accepts/rejects calls, the other button dials a pre-programmed VW service telephone number. The buttons on the front also light up red (like the dash) when the headlights are turned on, and it charges the phone.

RE Karl, nope, that is the sheer genius of VAG. Having a pointless connection and eyesore installed when it is not required with vehicles that contain the highline dash (the dash in GTI and optioned comfort line polos).

Mathemagician, for $180 I'm sure you can get the replacement panel for at least that, if not less!

The unit doesn't have a cry because the touch adapter is missing, it has a cry because nothing is in the cradle. So since you replaced the touch adapter with the iPhone cradle it'll be fine.

*You only need to do VCDS coding if you want nothing in the cradle or using a non-VW branded Bury cradle*

ie. If you get another VW-Branded phone specific cradle, you do not need to do any coding. But if you get a cradle from Bury (who make the cradle system), you will need to code it.

A thought for us iPhone lovers who are thinking of buying the iPhone 4/4S specific cradle:

The iPhone 5 is supposed to be launched in September or October this year, and it apparently features a different (smaller) dock connector. This means that any iPhone 4/4S compatible accessories will NOT work with the iPhone 5.

The gist of it is; if you are planning to get the iPhone 5 and you do not want to pay for 2 expensive VW cradles, wait until VW releases a cradle for the iPhone 5. I am pretty sure that they will. (No, I don't have any evidence for that but it would be weird if they didn't.)

Yes that is true. A consortium of phone manufacturers have concurred on an industry standard of mini-USB or micro-USB I cant remember which but apple is roomored to release there own new small connector much like the magnetic mac book charger cable. They like to keep things proprietary and license accessories to make more profit.
It's an interesting but inevitable situation. Hardware and accessory manufacturers have made significant commitment to the existing iPod dock but unfortunately for apple it is so big its a limiting factor for future developments like a super slender new iPhone.
When they do release a new phone I'd bet my life it comes with an adapter to old sockets. I'd also guess there'd be a form factor adapters that allows dock connectors to still work I'd hope.
                On an aside,
I tried voice dial with in built phone, not touch adapter and it was terrible for identifying name. This I guess is why they added touch adapter which does a better job.
I used Siri instead, worked first time.
Had to hold button on phone instead of mfd though.

Anyone else, I am kinda happy with the iPhone dock at first When i saw it o this firum ithought it looked huge and honestly its not small but since owning the car every person that got in my car asked what the touch adapter was and it pained me to explain, iPhone dock .... They don't notice also it charges my phone and it's a gps.

True that. I am certain there would be some adapters. However, in the case of the VW iPhone 4/4S cradle, the iPhone 4/4S fits perfectly into it, so I don't think there is any space to place an adapter in between...

The "funny" thing is though, that using the voice dial activation button on the bottom of the cradle (or the MFD function) is legal, but if you move your finger 3 cm higher to press and hold the home button to activate Siri, it becomes illegal, as you are "touching a part of your mobile phone's body" - to use the proper phrase.

I finally worked out that the VW Phone was using Last-First name recognition. Works ok once I say my friends' names backwards!

My cradle arrived yesterday. Yah! It JUST WORKS!
The touch thing woulda been tolerable if it worked!
Thanks everyone for helping me solve this annoying situation.
Now we're off to chat to the dealer who swears he's never heard of this problem and can't recreate it.

                        Cheers,

                          Hi
I have a Polo TSi comfortline MY 12.5 with the touch adapter,I have retro fitted an RNS510, I am using an I phone 3gs and have not paired the touch adapter to the phone, But paired to VW phone. Sometimes when starting the car it connects to the touch adapter and then says no network available, other times on the RNS it connects to my phone and all is good. Why does it do the former and why not connect to my I phone all the time? Do I need VCDS for some coding. Any help would be appreciated

Can anyone with the iPhone Bluetooth cradle confirm if their is any room between the iPhone and the cradle or does the iPhone sit very snug? The reason I ask is that I have a cover on my iPhone for protection and would prefer not to remove it for use in the car.

                            Cheers
                            Chris

The system is designed so the that adapter is the only user registered with the BT unit, so it usually takes connection priority over other users (like your phone). You can do VCDS coding (link in sig) so that you can remove the touch adapter and just have the cradle bare. Others have mentioned that you can set priority to what "user" connects to the BT unit first but you need full MFD screen in your tacho, it's in the MFD BT menu.

I genuinely walked out of buying a fully optioned 5 door Polo gti today because of the fkn bluetooth thing.
                                it looks like a tumour,
i dont get why they didnt put it in the glovebox from what i can gather you don't need it if you have the display unit.
has anyone removed theirs and if yes what does it look like?!
                                cheers
