Additionally, you can press and hold the Talk/i button on the cradle for the 9W7's very own voice control. It works best with a fake American accent, I find.
Glad to hear it's worked out for you

If I replace the touchscreen with one of these iPhone Handyadapters, then my phone will work with the 9w7 via bluetooth even if the iPhone is still in my pocket - not in the cradle? (Gee - that'd make it just like the cheap BT handsfree I bought 9 years ago! Nice work VW)
I gather from my tests and reading here that the 9w7 won't work with an iPhone unless there's something else enabling it (either a 510 front end, or in the case of my car with 310 front end, it needs something plugged into the stupid cradle on the dashboard - and the iPhone adapter fulfils that role).
So I either get the VCDS cable and follow the instructions at the top of this thread, or I get the adapter from Germany/ebay. (or replace the 310 with a 510 front end)
Since I have that bracket stuck on the dash, I figure it would make an ok spot to sit my phone (which can then serve as my gps too.)
For short trips I'd rather not HAVE to put my phone in the cradle just to get it to connect to the 9w7, hence my question above.
Thanks in advance.
David.

So going to get one of those cradles. awsome find.
I was told by VWA thet the unit was placed there cause the standard models with the stock radio would not work with the bluetooth they use in the golf and other models. and because they use the same dash as the gti it would have a hole so they just put that unit in aswell.
how much truth is in that i dont know.

Some truth, but not much. The hole has to be cut into the dash at pre-delivery, not the factory. The actual Bluetooth unit that is fitted under the seat along with wiring is a factory install however (try installing it in a polo with under seat drawers!). To answer the question RE iPhone and the cradle, no it does not new to be in the cradle to work, the cradle is just somewhere do you to sit the iPhone. Regardless of which unit you have, some functionality will be lost due to the differing displays but the overall function of the Bluetooth system will remain the same.sigpic

We didn't want this touch screen unit and were prepared to forego the Bluetooth altogether if it meant we could stop the ridiculous touch screen. They followed up on this for us and rang back with the outcome
The touchscreen is sent seperately and is just slotted into cradle (not sure if at pre delivery or dealership) I have viewed this from

My mistake, the pre-standard Bluetooth polos had this cut in at pre delivery.
Just a thought for those that really don't want this screen or cradle, why not have it deactivated and buy the replacement plastic panel? There is a part number for it, I'm sure it could be ordered from somewhere...sigpic

The module in the MY12.5 Polos is better than the 9W7. The main benefit of the cradle is you can see the phone and not have to use that silly touch screen thingy.
I've changed my BT module via a VCDS cable so it'd stop complaining that the touch screen unit was missing. My iPhone connects via BT for the phone and MDI for music and sits in my gloveboxMY16 Octavia RS 162 Race Blue Combi
