  • Whats with the removable bluetooth screen thingie?

Picking up my Polo 66TDI tomorrow, the new 2012 release with dash mounted bluetooth...am intrigued as to the reason behind the removable screen thing? Why??? Why not have it a permanent fixture? I dont see the point in the bracket that holds it being fixed, and having a separate screen?
Im slightly concerned that it will look (to the untrained eye) like a mobile phone has been left in its dock - dont want the car broken into coz some hooligan thinks he can score a mobile. Or am i just being silly.
The dealer is installing the touch screen radio for me (apparently they dont come factory fitted any more on that model?) as they still had one in parts - will this be integrated with the bluetooth? or does it not work that way.
can i stream music with the bluetooth, or only with the MDI?

Also, anything else i should know / look out for? Handy hints?

First time VW owner, looking forward to it

Just be warned if you have the DSG model, that the gearbox may have some shuddering initially (first couple thousand km's). Also if you get a "false neutral", IMMEDIATELY contact your dealership. If they do not do anything try VW customer car and if they dismiss you, I would get your lawyer(s)/solicitor(s) involved.

Oh and try using BP Ultimate diesel (its the low sulphur stuff and better quality), it will actually give a noticeable increase in performance.

Otherwise, from what i've seen if you take the dash mounted BT module off, there will be a hole in the dashboard sadly. Also, I think the dash mounted module take priority over the other BT unfortunately.

I have no idea why VWA decided to use that option for Bluetooth. It was the single reason why I decided not to go ahead with a Polo order and went down the road and picked up a Fabia Monte Carlo for the same price.

What is even weirder is that it seems VW are shipping two bluetooth units in the cars. See the MY12.5 thread for pics and details. I'd love to know the reasoning behind that.

Those TouchPhone kit screens are normally dealer-fitted. They work pretty well, though.

Try and opt out if you're not keen on it, and go down another path with the Bluetooth.

Not anymore - in the MY12.5 they are factory wired & PATRICKS fixes the actual BT in OZ!

            Yuck.

Not what I consider a good compromise.

So the functionality of it is a bit poo - Im sticking to using the RCD510 radio they put in to control the phone...much easier.

Can you get the option taken off before it's built?

That's what I have been also been told by my dealership.
I am waiting for my contact at VGA to get back to me though to see if the touch screen unit can be mounted somewhere inconspicuous. The one thing I was told by dealership was that the unit was mounted with double sided tape, but it appears that info is incorrect.

It also seems that VGA have had a few enquiries about this Bluetooth being mounted in the dash and not a good look.
Really hope we can have ours mounted somewhere over the drivers side down low, as don't want it on display and sure don't want a damn hole in the dash

I also agree with another poster that having it on display may look like a mobile left in it's charger and on display for a smash and grab.

Just got this confimration from my dealership:
We have spoken to our product team and in turn the factory.

It is not possible to have the Bluetooth cradle not installed/omitted.

This has been requested previously hence the prompt response.

If you're worried about Smash and grab, please note that the touch adapter can be removed from it's base.

You can even put any phone-specific bury unit in there too if you wanted wired communication and charging.

                          I know, but its annoying

Im SO glad i have the RCD510 unit to control the bluetooth. Controlling it with the bluetooth touch screen is not practical or safe at all. You need to take both eyes completely off the road, no speed dials, and navigating takes a fair few button pushes, and i need to lean forward to reach it (i am pretty short though), would have been much better if mounted closer to the steering wheel.
Im yet to see how good the voice activation is, its still 'learning' my voice, and i dont even have an aussie accent really!
I think this one was a fail on VW's part, great that they are including bluetooth as standard - but not keen on the design and functionality.

Incidentally does anyone know if the message reading function is available in australia? I cant get it to work - is this a europe only feature?

Yep, I do understand that the touch adaptor can be removed from its cradle, but if it wasn't mounted on the dash in such a stupid place to start with, it wouldn't be something to remember to remove if concerned.

I don't know if there's enough room (don't have the car) but is there anywhere on the drivers side by drivers door that it could have gone?
I hope to hear from VGA today as a follow up on the blue tooth, looks like the touch screen adaptor needs to be installed for Bluetooth to work, BUT all I want to know is if Patricks can install it elsewhere (our choosing) as I am hoping just the wiring is installed during production and not the hole in the dash as well...surely not?

Personally, I think they should have fully integrated Bluetooth into the RCD510 or as it appears the GTI has another unit under the drivers seat...wired that so the touch screen doesn't need to be included as a tacky add on.

It's just rubbish really because you can buy the whole Bluetooth setup for the RCD510 and not have any touch screen thingy an it still works the same, as people on here have shown.
