I chose market value initially for my policy. But the market value of $19500 was way too low for my car which was just a year old. They were going to replace it new for old but when I explained to them that I wasn't willing to wait 6 months for a new car, they paid me out for the value I purchased it for (I'm assuming they probably would have had to pay more than the 30K for a replacement so they settled for what I payed).

Glad it worked out well with RACV, as I've got my policy under them as well.

Thanks Frozze...yeah glad it did work out alright. But insurance companies are still so hard to deal with, doesn't matter which one it is. I got my GTI insured with them again but this time under an agreed value policy.

Cant get through to the insurance company yet, anyone know whether this will be written off, i think more than likely.
          A very sad Christmas Day....

          Sorry to hear about this.

If it were me, I would aim for a replacement car with the same spec - drive this one until the new one comes.
          OR,
If the Insurance won't write it off, ask them to pay out the repair value, keep the car and drive it as is.

I would not like to have it repaired as it will take time to repair and depending on the repair, may not be to the same standard as original.

          Just my view.

Thanks for that these are really good ideas. I really dont want to have it repaired either. I have the assessment tomorrow Arvo. So fingers crossed they write it off it not I will ask for the alternatives.

Aw, Gambit. I'm sorry to see the damage. I know I would be devastated if that happened to my Polo. Hope all goes well tomorrow.

Well had the assessment and there was no definitive outcome all dependent on what my repair estimate is, which I need to forward to AAMI. So just a waiting game now the assessor said leaning more to repair rather than write off.

Bugger. It's times like this I bet you wished you had used your car as a target for golf practice just so you could get those extra dents. Joking of course....I would never advocate insurance fraud.

I remember when my Astra got t-boned. $7.5k damage....fell just below the 80% value of the car to make it a write off. If only the other driver hit the car just a liiiittle bit harder

                            Update:

Written off - repairable - but:

                            1) roof / side tops required conventional repairs
                            2) New boot / Bonnet / Roof
                            3) Whole car would need to be repainted
                            4) seats / floor to be replaced due to being soaked
                            5) Side airbag was soaked from the broken rear window - would have to be replaced

Soooo, I can still drive it for 48 hours (it has a salvage sticker on it) - they will call me to tow it in 48 hours.

                            Car shopping time.

Keen to know what you're looking for now. Another Polo Gti or something different
