Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Same, the "fixes" definitely improve the consumption. What oil brand and viscosity you using as well?

Now at 3276.2k's since the work was done. And the level was down by a third on the dipstick. Took under 200ml to bring it back up.
garage had used Synpower X1-111 5w30. Unfortunate that I only have the castrol edge to top up.

At your next oil change might be worth trying a different oil like Liqi Moly or a decent 5w40. Im using Shell Ultra Helix 5w40 at the mo and that seems to be lasting considering im doing short journeys.

        • I've till got two years to run on the warranty so will probably go back to my dealer. They really look after us and the head tech really knows his stuff. He has just tuned the GM's golf GTI too.

          • Was talking to the dealer this morning about oil consumption in my fiances Polo GTi. Previously, I thought 1L/1000kms was "normal", however he said they don't deem it to be faulty until the engine is consuming 2L/1000kms. That is crazy, why even change the oil?

            • that is incorrect on both counts.

The maximum permissible usage is 500ml/1000km (ie: 1L/2000km - obviously your service people are dislexic). It's in your owners manual. That's a maximum (the owners manual says "up to 500ml/1000km) , not a norm.

Personally, I'd be annoyed if it was greater than 100ml/1000km

              • Just checked the oil tonight.
Just done under 1400k since the last time I dipped the stick and topped it up. Level hasn't really moved by any noticeable amount.
so the total amount used since the oil squirters were changed is about 200ml.

Sounds ok. Hope the useage stays low.

Wow, not bad. Just over 4000 miles. Is that short, long or mix journeys?

Driving to work, 28km each way mainly town driving with about 10km of dual carriageway. Max speed 90kph. And the wife only uses it in "D"
just had a new radiator though at 38,000. Three months out of warranty, but give VW credit they did the work as a goodwill claim.

if you mean last month, I would be very nice to your dealer and see if they can do a goodwill claim.
It can be done in a day but is better to leave it with them overnight so the sealant can cure fully around the sump. Labour is as you say about 4hrs.
They can check and see if your engine falls in the build range for the bulletin.
