  • Done 4000km and topped up 250ml. Slightly higher than my previous top up but due to a cross country run of around 1400km in total and cruising at 150km/h on average.

    • Just updating on my new breather hose replacement. oil light went on after full top up at 1.3k lower than before my change which was about 1.7k Gonna wait till the oil light goes off again before I take it in for an oil consumption test. Sigh this is a never ending story

        • Hi Guys

Still having issues with my oil consumption on my MY13 Gti.

I am sure its already on here somewhere (I can't seem to find it!) but can someone please tell me how I can measure the oil usage just by looking at the dipstick? I think I read somewhere that if oil is only covering the ball of the dipstick then this means that 1 litre of oil has been used?

Can somebody please confirm this? My oil was topped up 2 weeks ago (oil was at the high end of the stick) and when I checked it again yesterday, it has already travelled halfway down the indicator part of the dipstick.

I have already been back to VW 7 times in 10 months to top the oil up and they have done 2 oil consumption tests and both times have told me that my car is only using 250ml to 300ml but this doesn't sound right to me.

          Thanks for your help
          Cheers
          Scott

I suggest you only top up your oil and check your oil with a cold engine before your first crank of the day. ITs the most accurate way to monitor oil lost.

              • 1500km after my engine rebuild and the oil has not moved on the dip stick. Highly recommend pushing dealers to do engine rebuilds if you are getting high levels of oil consumption. My MY12.5 Polo GTi was using approx 1L/1000km before the engine rebuild.

Thanks..but this still doesn't answer my question..i still have no idea how to measure my oil usage properly (I want to be able to measure it myself as I don't believe the dealer is doing it properly)

                    • Hi guys,

I might be a bit hopeful here, but when you go to the dealers for a top up / refill the 1L bottle. Do you get charged for it? Surely this should be free? Is there a VW Australia policy somewhere that I can point to?

I have done less than 1500km and the oil is sitting near the middle of Band C on the dip stick ... sounds like I am might need to have a conversation with the dealer.

Has anyone else noticed what the colour of your oil is when they wipe it on a white towel? Mine is grey/black after only 1500kms (compared to a clearish/translucent yellow, the natural colour of the oil I assume). Is this normal?

                      Thanks guys.

The only proper way to do an oil test is to drain the oil & add a measured amount to bring the oil level to the high mark on the dipstick. Do however many km they want you to do - 2000km would make sense. Then drain the oil with the engine at approx the same temp, on the same hoist & let it drain for the same amount of time. Then measure how much came out & compare it to how much went in.

There should be photos of the dipstick oil level at the start & the finish of the test & the sump plug, oil filler cap & dipstick should all be taped or somehow "stuck" in place to prevent tampering

                        Colour is normal.

Free oil is totally up to the dealer.

Your engine is still bedding in & it is normal to use some oil in the first 5000km. Just enjoy the car & stop worrying. I'd suggest you drive up a few mountains to aid the bedding-in process

                          I might explain in full.

                          Polo GTI 6R

Engine block replaced at 14,000kms due to piston not lined up, oil leaking and shortly after the something pipe was replaced with a bigger one and less soot comes out the back of exhaust and not as much oil chewed.

But the oil light keeps coming on and i refill too and WORSE is that...

My display in the dash goes RED

                          OIL Pressure HIGH
                          TURN OFF ENGINE
                          (with loud beeping)

Anyone know or experience this? I have my 41500km service soon but I've already done 44289kms to date... (Dealer knows) I've had the car since Jan 2012... New

Sounds like a TPI I read yesterday regarding oil pressure warning coming up. I didn't read the whole thing but it is known about...

I know that someone will not agree with me, but black oil after only 1.500 Kms is not a good sign...

Black oil on a gasoline engine means excessive blow-by or something wrong, while is normal on a diesel engine...
Mine is still clear after more than 10.000Kms and burned 0.5l in 10.000Kms...

EDIT: here two old pics already posted, taken after the first 6.500Kms (now after oil changing it's even more clear):

                              • My 12.5 has been in for 2 different hose repalcements.
After only 1000kms from picking it up from the dealer the low oil warning light has come on and for the first time ever.
My car has 6900kms on the clock.
2 attempts at fixing the problem and no help what so ever, but I can believe it burnt that much oil after only 1000 kms
