Tube should be around 6mm diameter.
Just cut it to length and push it down between the two strips of felt seal.
I've just tested the tube vs. no tube and I can say it does make a slight difference, however my Polo's seals weren't very noisy to start with and it's difficult to hear the noise they make over the diesel clatter.

    • Appreciate the guide. Hard to fathom how that will make a difference, but it's not really going to cost much to test it out! Likewise the car care product. Might order some this week.

      Cheers guys.

        That's ok

From poking around a bit with my setup, I've found that the doors close more tightly and they are much harder to push in (when closed) than before.
I've actually taken the tubes out of the Polo and into the Megane, simply because the seals in the Polo weren't noisy in the first place, but the Meg's were.
It has certainly made a difference in the Megane so I'm sure if your Polo has squeaky seals it will help.

I found mine in the shed at home haha.

I'm sure Bunnings will have some though, it's just 6mm irrigation hose.

            Good luck

Make sure you measure the length you need.

ALSO: I'm now making a more detailed guide for a separate thread...

                • So last night driving back home, i was going around a corner and my car was stuck in 3rd gear. Revs were at 800-900 (around idle) and there was no power for a good couple seconds until I made it go down to 2nd.

Is this just the clutch being a bit slow to engage/disengage. This is the first time I've really had any gearbox problems besides the "normal" jerkiness...

Welcome to mechatronic hell it probably didn't throw a fault code either so the dealership can't do anything. At least it dropped back when you asked it too, it might have just been in 2 minds about what to do. It's still bloody disconcerting when it happens though.

                    • You might have a fault in the accelerator pedal like me. Watch this space as I'm still trying to fully diagnose mine but I might be on to something...many thanks to Gavs and his assistance!

It appears to be a fault in the make of the graphite variable resistor which has been worn prematurity due to what looks like excessive pressure from the plastic housing.

The result is a dead spot at the start of the accelerator creating little or no throttle response, surging once the dead spot has passed, hesitation to kick down and excessive downshifting and turbo cut off (normally associated with letting of the throttle when at speed)

Its not gearbox related, though it highly feels like it. I have seen what these gearboxes can do and I know it can do better than it is!!!

^Just curious how many km have you done and what year and make is your polo?

                      • Just ticked over 10,000 and its a 12.5 GTI. The damn gearbox seems to have a mind of its own some days and some days its perfect...

Like gavs said it might be the gearbox thinking too hard and its not actually mechatronics or clutch etc. touch wood! Let us know how your diagnosis goes.

                        • Just putting a feeler out there with GTi guys...

Has anyone ever parked their car for longer than 2 weeks?

I've done this twice now, and both times the car started with a HUGE plume of smoke (wasn't able to determine blue or black from inside), took several more cranks and a stupidly rough idle. The last time this happened, it even stalled and tripped the CEL! I quick turn off and back on solved the issue.

I feel that this might be an indication of the oil issues these motors suffer... thoughts?

The thinking is done by the mechatronics unit mate, I wouldn't be holding my breath on it lasting the nest 3 years!

RE fastlane, not on mine but as you know, mine isn't a 2 stroke version of the twincharger engine....

                            • Yes Gavs that's true the mechatronics is the brain of the gearbox but the engine control unit is the heart so to speak.

If the brake or accelerator pedal plays up and gives the gearbox wrong figures for how much throttle / braking there is well I guess it will show like the problem I have on my car.

I'm still yet to get more evidence of this but my car has NEVER driven as smooth as it did the day I put your accelerator pedal in which says something...

                              • Well, I picked up the Polo GTI on Friday, this time with the steering wheel pointing the right way!

Yeah! I've finally got a working car!

                                Not!

Has been towed, now to wait until Monday to find out what else they've f**ked up...
