Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.     Was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get off the air manifold on the AXZ engines (one piece manifold not like the later R36 manifolds) - seem to be some kind of metal pipe running in front of the manifold securing it in place, I think I'v gotten loose all the bolts, but still seem stuck - thinking this metal pipe is the thing hindering it from coming loose, but can't really see how this thing is supposed to be loosened.....

      I have only done it on the BWS engine, but if there are similarities, it will be the lower fuel rail feeding the short-runner injectors; if you have removed the bolts, try wiggling it to help release the o-rings.

        Should it come straight upwards? (Does the fuel and/or injector have to come out, or should you be able to get it loose without ? (I think the R36 engine have a 2 piece inlet ? )

        I'v partly removed front to make room, but still haven't been able to fully see how this things is attached...

          Directly forward to the front of the car.; if you are lucky, the o-rings will release, and the injectors stay in the block; I had them pull out when I did my walnut blasting so they needed to be resealed.

          Yes the BWS (R36) has the two-part manifold that makes it easier, but I have seen someone fit the one-piece on these, so the block mounting and injectors must be in the same place.

          Check out the picture here; that's the service position; the front carrier moves forward on some M10 x 120mm bolts, to give more room up front.

            Ok, so in theory the inlet manifold can come out without removing the fuel rail/injectors ? (but they might "follow" when one pull ? ) what does these o-rings attach to ? (is it holding the manifold to the injectors or ?

              As MIG says fuel rail comes out towards the front and I think in order for it to come out the manifold should come out first. I've had this done for my PCV valve membrane replacement (on AXZ engine) though the job was done by a mechanic. It seemed he had to disassemble half of the front end of the car to do the job. A word of warning from my own experience - when you're putting back the fuel rail make sure you don't pinch any of the o-rings otherwise you'll need to de-mount the manifold and the rest to replace the (fuel leaking) o-ring/s. Edit - on second thought you MAY need to loosen the fuel rail first to jiggle the manifold out. To be honest I can't quite recall the sequence.

                Was out working on the car again, after some fiddling, and a bit more view after completely removing the front (only leaving the radiators/fans) I was able to remove the manifold, but turned out the fuel rail in fact have to come out first/with it, and it obviously had to drag out 2 of the injectors at the same time - guess I'l be refurbishing those at the same time.........what a stu*** design this is

                btw, anyone have experience with the bran "IWIS" when it comes to the chains ? (seem to be a OEM supplier and is the chains that comes in a kit from Febi).
