  • Trying to get ACC "Follow to Stop" working...

Let me start by saying that I have a 2017 Passat SEL 1.8TSI (NMS in USA), so it doesn't really fit the B7/B8 designation. If this is the wrong area, sorry. I'm here in your forum because I've come across some good information, but alas, I need guidance.

My Passat has ACC that deactivates to about 12mph, then alerts in the MFD to "Apply Brakes!". Curiously, the AEB [autonomous emergency braking] will bring the vehicle to a standstill, so I bought VCP to try and get 'TJA' and 'Follow-to-Stop' working. So far, no dice!

Support for VCP leaves a lot to be desired, and since the NMS Passat is in select world markets (N.America, China, S.Korea and I think Middle East), there is little information regarding retrofits and specific coding.

If anyone here is able to help or point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I am open to replacing module(s) to acquire these features too. I can post an Autoscan if you'd like.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

TJA won't work, that's a newer MQB only capability (although keep an eye on Open Pilot from Comma.ai, NMS support is in development).

Follow to stop requires a suitable radar and in the case of newer radars, the correct FEC (feature enable code) which is basically a software license.
Let's start by you finding the part number of your 13 front distance radar module.
Connect to it in VCP and let us know the details.

The 7N0 Bosch radar indeed uses FEC locks to determine what features it has.
In your case your FEC will be something like 'ACC low without follow to stop'. This is also a PR code which can be determined from your VIN.

These licenses are tied to your VIN. It is not possible to purchase an upgrade from VW to the better FEC 'ACC high with FTS and City Emergency Brake'

It is possible for some people to work around the restrictions and install the better license. They require you have a VAS5054a clone cable and can remotely access your car over this interface.
It is also not a cheap exercise, expect to pay something like 350Euro if not more.

TJA is also not possible as your radar does not have the fusion CAN connection between the radar and front assist camera that exists in MQB platform cars.

I found a user on another forum who goes by "doctor" and claims to unlock FeC/SWaP without trouble. Do you think I could retrofit a used 5Q0/3Q0 radar and enable TJA too, or is there another buss for fusion CAN?

              You cannot get TJA.
The architecture and CAN messaging between PQ46/NMS and MQB is completely different.
In MQB the camera has its own dedicated bus to the radar and they pass messages to one another.
You can't enable this in PQ/NMS as they won't know how to talk to each other, or to the ECU/ABS/Steering rack

                OK.
I'll just have to accept that TJA isn't possible with my Passat, but I still want "Follow-to-Stop". Do you have a contact for performing FeC/SWaP coding remotely?

Can I ask where you find this kind of information? Is erWin or ETKA a resource for these technical details?

This sort of stuff is well outside of official channels.
Sounds like you have found someone to assist.

If TJA is something you really want to have, try looking into the Open Pilot project from comma.ai.
PQ/NMS support is coming, I'm currently running an early build.

Well, I found someone who said they could try. The problem is that NMS is not familiar to them.

TJA is something I really wanted due to my type of commute. I watched the TSS 2.0 video comparisons. OpenPilot FTW! The Toyota system appears to function very similar to my NMS Passat, except mine is missing the Follow-to-Stop feature. Are you a dev for OpenPilot? How do I get on board?

I'd never heard of comma.ai. It looks like they've taken a high-end smartphone and added some peripherals and software to integrate it with the vehicle. This is new to me, so I'm not exactly sure where to start. It looks like the comma two comes with everything needed, just add on a vehicle harness? I joined them on discord so hopefully I'll get a chance to read up.

                    Thanks for the info.

For VW still need a custom harness, but otherwise the comma2 has everything else you need.
As it's new hardware there is some integration work still to do with VW, that will happen in the near future.

Join the Discord and check the pinned messages at the top of the volkswagen channel.
Keep in mind we only got it running last week in PQ/NMS so there is a way to go yet. But if you want to get involved at the beginning of what will be a very exciting journey feel free

Since you stated that the NMS Passat has "ACC Low", and the Comma.ai wiki (VW page) describes the stock function of both ACC High and Low, what happens for ACC Low after the driver takes over braking? Does the ACC disable but can then be resumed from a stop with the steering wheel RES button?

Also, curiously, the VW GTI in USA does not have EPB, yet is equipped with factory ACC High. Makes me think this whole ACC High/Low scenario is not settled...

Open pilot will disengage on brake push the same as factory ACC.
So after coming to a stop you have to resume if you don't have follow to stop.
With follow to stop OP is able to resume when the car in front moves off.

Tja has the same behaviour but OP can do a resume from a longer stop (though not indefinitely)

Also the PR codes are just not ACC high and ACC low.
There are multiple variants (I don't know what they all are)
But things like - ACC low with follow to stop and City Emergency Brake. ACC to 160kmh.
                          Or
ACC high with follow to stop and City Emergency brake. ACC to 210kmh. Cyclist detection.

Would OpenPilot bring my car to a full stop without MFD alerting me to apply brakes?
