  • Cam Timming Help 02 Passat 2.8 V6

    Hi guys...

Long story short... My thermostat housing started leaking and the timing belt and water pump was done by last owner.

I was able to remove the top belt cover, fan belt, fan belt tensioner, lower TB cover and could see the TS housing and the obvious water leak. Now I didnt want to remove the TB or go into service position or rip half the car apart and I also didnt have the Crank TDC locking pin or the cam brace to hole the cams from moving....

There was no way to get it out so I thought Id move the TB half way off the TB tensioner pully and cam sprocket.. So after removing some tension on the TB slowly... I was able to slide the belt off enough to pull the housing... Great, BUT. I have a feeling the cam slipped a tooth or two on the belt putting the tension back on...

So thats where Im at... I now have to wait till monday for vw to get my new housing and trying to research how I can check the timing.. Im kicking myself for not marking it in the worst case scenario that it script a tooth like it has

So do I leave it as it is till I get the new TS housing in and done then I was thinking of turning the Crank to TDC mark making sure cylinder 3 is TDC then pull the rocker cover gasket off the side that moved (drivers side) and see if the marks on the cam lines up... Im sure it will either be advanced or retarded slightly... So id remove some tension on the TB again and with a assistant use cam spanner to turn the cam a tooth either to where it should be...

Is this going to work for me.. Or should I pull both top cam covers... get the dam lockin pin and see if the clamp fits on both cams and if not **** the one I thought that moved...

    I donno need advice.

    Cheers

Getting it wrong will be heaps more expensive than doknh it right. I'd buy the locking tool to be sure. Under a hundred on eBay I think. The diamond plates on the cams have a big hole and a little one. The big ones should face each other at tdc.

      Oh wow.

Been a long time since I've done one of these. They're not the easiest belt to do. Definitely helps to lock the crank and cams.

Have you done timing belt in any other cars before? If not, the safest option for you, is to call your local mechanic.

Thanks for the replies guys.. forgot to say I own my own shop, so def not the first TB ive changed. Just never on a 02 passat with the 2.8. and I dont want to change it. Im able to change the TS housing without removing the belt completely by sliding it on the gears half way...

Just wondering if there is a procedure to check the timing on the cams to crank at TDC.

Apparently on cylinder 3 TDC the big holes in the cam dimond need to be facing inwards towards each other. If anything it would of shifted a tooth one way... just not sure which hence why Ill turn the engine around by hand slowly till TDC and then make sure cams are in the right spot.

Is there any other marks other then those dimonds? If thats the case Ill have to make up a tool in the shop monday. Anyone got any cad drawing or anything?

I was told there is a timing mark on the cam chain sprockets that when crank at TDC these lines should like up.

Just want to check guys... not looking at pulling the front of the car to redo the hole belt

You can pull the front forward about 300mm, and tilt it forward. Doesn't sound like much, but it helps a lot.

When I did one, the crank was locked with the pin through the side of the block, and the brace across the cams. One thing I've learnt over the years with VWs is never trust what you think are marks, and always time it up before you disassemble it. Half the time, the can gears aren't keyed to the cams.

Yeh I no but lucky I didnt have to... put the engine in TDC and made myself a cam lockin bar to line the cams up... It had moved 2 teeth and valves still didnt interfere turning the motor to TDC by hand... Anyway after using the tool at TDC its obvious if the cam is out a tooth compared to the other... So could of really done it without... but anyway something to had to the tool box.

              next problem...

Driving around perfect.... restart perfect... randomly starts misfiring.... if I unplug plug 3 from coil runs good again when I put it back... VERY VERY Weird.

Going to load up Vag com and get the codes now.

How did you go with the misfiring ? Did you sort that out ?

Well I thought I had it sorted... After doing the transmission service and sorting the TS housing out and then the cam timing after slipping the belt off to do the TS housing.

Cleared all codes with Vag com and took her for a drive... I have to say I was very impressed with the results the transmission shifts normally and there is no surging under load in top gear under light thottle... The wife has been driving it to work the last few days with not a hint of misfire.

I drove around with in it this afternoon and pull up to a intersection and guess what.... misfire.. (car shakes, down two cylinders) I couldnt believe it.

So drove off with the misfire (hard to accelerate etc) then all of a sudden misfire gone.... and runs beautifully all the way home.

Soooo get the vag com out and did a full scan..

Looks like Im a tooth out still on the cam even tho the car runs and drives beautifully. But this code wasnt there before doing the TS Housing and slipping the belt off.

The random misfires i think is either the coils or module playing up?

                  Any ideas people.

Also just purchased a 2010 a3 1.8 tfsi with guess what broken timing chain tentioner... oh the fun continues

By the off chance is there anyone with a 2.8 passat working coil module?

Oh and the abs module was disconnected... has been playing up with vag com.

There is a small wire inside I need thats broken its connection... I will re solder once I sort this random misfire out..

I just hope it solves the problem, best of luck on that..
I know parts arent cheap for VW's, it was bad enough for me just getting a fuel filter for our Polo, $67 (built in regulator) where my Ford it was like $10
                        Sourcing parts online ?
