I suspect VW saw the R36 as stepping into Audi territory...

My local VW dealer told me we're looking at mid-October, but that's all I could get out of him!

Given the models on offer from the Passat's direct competitors (eg. Liberty, Mondeo, Camry, Mazda6) it wouldn't surprise me if all we get are three variants. As other posters have suggested, Skoda and Audi will fill the performance gaps.

Time will tell ... only have to wait a month!

It's a shame there probably won't be an R36 replacement. I've had mine for seven years and it's time to move on but I didn't even consider the RS4 when I was looking for replacements. I went straight to Mecedes Benz and ordered a C63s wagon instead. I don't think VW/Audi quite get it: brand loyalty only goes so far. The C63s misses out on all wheel drive but to my mind it beats the RS4 in every other way.

          I'll miss the R36.

Why didn't you consider the Golf R Wagon?

I did. I also have access to an A45 and used that as a benchmark. The Golf R was lacking power, torque, noise, and acceleration. All of those are easily overcome. The RS3 is just too much money, like for like, compared to the A45. I had a deposit on one but backed out when pricing was announced. It starts off friendly enough but by the time you spec it as close as possible to A45 level, it's $110k drive away - and that's not fully optioned.

I felt the Golf was a step backwards from the R36 in a few ways, but a step forward in others.

My main aversion was the engine. I know it's great, but... I'll probably be able to buy a two litre turbo four in ten years time. I'm not sure I'll be able to buy anything larger. Hybrids and electrics may be fast, but for the moment I want something that's a dying breed.

Plus, I work for myself. A few deals I wasn't expecting to happen actually happened and I ended up finding a way to justify the C63. Make hay while the sun shines, and all of that

‘No plans’ for performance VW Passat

Volkswagen Passat - ‘No plans’ for performance VW Passat | GoAuto

Although I'm looking forward to the B8 Passat and possibly trading in my B7, can't help but feel disappointed at how constrained Volkswagen are keeping the Passat. Even if one were not to buy a performance model, it enhances the brand across the range. But what would I know?! Volkswagen have done the numbers and the Passat will deliver what's most profitable for the company. The Passat is staying true to the executive business class image.

So the 206 TSI R-Line Passat that apparently is offered by Volkswagen New Zealand is not a performance Passat?

                  I'm confused...

Exactly..... A smaller market but clearly VW NZ has their head in the game. VW AUS is either holding a 206KW 4-motion Passat on a delayed introduction keeping quiet about it or they have literally given up on a (semi) performance Passat leaving it to Skoda with the new 206kw 4x4 Superb & Audi with the Quattro 2.0T A4. My guess is we may not see this type of performance Passat again, especially if we take into account what VW AUS has done limiting themselves to selling a limited edition Golf R wagon only......

                    They've gone mad...!

Maybe a bulk order from VW NZ for a bunch of 206KW 4-motion Passats is in order fella's......? I know, I know, whish full thinking & all that.............................................. ......!

I suspect that the regular petrol and diesel Passat models will be released next month and that we will have to wait until 2016 for the popular Alltrack model.

Maybe its a supply issue or possibly a VWA "drip feed" release policy for the new Passat? You would imagine that dealers are clamouring for a new Passat Alltrack to sell....

Yeah, I think you're right prn31. I'd suggest a case of poor proofreading and fact gathering on the part of the journalist who wrote the piece. The lastest issue of "Das Auto" arrived in the mail today and there's a feature on the B8 Passat clearing stating it will be released this October. I wonder if the first shipment is on its way or if they've already reached our shores?

I popped into my friendly local dealer today to inquire about the new Passat. The first guy I talked to simply said "it has not been released yet" to which I said yeah yeah but it's been out for twelve months in Europe, surely you must have some info. Once he saw my Passat in the car park the sales manager came over and pulled me into his office. He told me all he could remember re specs. He could even pull up what models/colours he would be getting in first (first shipment is in a "secure warehouse" in Melbourne) but he could not find the email he got with more info but I gave him my email for him to get back to me. This is what he wrote:

                            Hi Mark,

Thanks for dropping in earlier, I have found the information on the New Passat that I have been given. A lot of information is commercial in confidence, but I can share the following:

There will be 2 Petrol models, both powered by the same 1.8 litre, 132 KW engine, with 2 specification levels. I cannot give you too much information on exact specification, other than the base model will be cloth interior, whilst still maintaining a similar overall specification to the current 118 TSI Passat.

The next model in the petrol does get a Vienna leather interior, along with the expected upgrades in features & trim.

There will only be one diesel version, this will be a higher specification than the petrol & include a number of the “Hero” features of the overseas model Passat, along with a higher level (Nappa Leather) Seating trim.

There will be 3 option packs, with one available on the base model, two on the mid range petrol & Diesel versions.

As discussed earlier, we have no idea of pricing as yet, but we are more than happy to communicate this once we have received the pricing & full specifications from Volkswagen Australia.

Thanks again for your enquiry & I hope that Gowans Volkswagen can assist you further when the New Passat launches. Unfortunately, I will not be able to assist in this process, as I will be finishing with Gowans Volkswagen before the launch, I have included [salesman's] email address & contact number if you wish to discuss the vehicle further & hope you find the information provided useful.

Aha! Thanks for sharing Mark. Be interesting to see what's offered in those option packs. I'll need to figure out if I want to trade-in my B7 125TDI sedan for a mid-range petrol or top-range diesel. I'll test drive both and then have a chat with my local VW dealer who gave me a commendable deal almost 3 years ago.

Yes I am most interested in these option packs! The dealer seemed to think there was an R-Line option originally, even googling a pic of one for me. He was most excited! He also thought the petrol and diesel Highline would come with the digital instrument cluster, but couldn't be sure. My bet is that it would be part of an option pack. I hope the LED headlamps are standard fare..
I was surprised at the return to cloth seats for the poverty pack, but then I prefer the cloth seats in my (my0 B6 to the early leather version.
