So does anyone know if the FOB's are really VIN specific from Germany or is this just a sales pitch to stop OEM and secondhand units?

The fobs are NOT VIN specific.

The OEM is Volkswagen so why would they stop sales of their own remotes!

And you can use secondhand remotes.

Take the time to read the information and links posted above because they CLEARLY explain what you can do to save money.

To assist you here are two links

      Some info from me

        the second link just gives
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

So I could possibly obtain a s/h unit from a wrecker and have it programmed to work... manual key aside...

The first link I gave you explains how it the key works. Ignore the keyfob part because the key is the only difference, the immobiliser etc is all identical.

In particular the immobiliser because this is the part that has to be coded to the car by the VW mothership.

            Second link fixed.

And yes you could get one from a wrecker however your chances of this are next to none, best bet is off ebay.

You realise that the day after you get your brand new $500 key, you will find the old one somewhere very obvious like on top of the kitchen bench!

Yeah I am prepared for that to happen...

I just cannot risk the loss of the only key and having to flatbed my car to the dealers to get the window broken to get in after waiting 2 weeks for the new key to arrive

Thanks... I did find the second post after a search of the entire forum not just the Passat section.

I can get a FOB from the UK or even US but I need to confirm a few things...
                  1. Is the manual key the only unique part?
                  2. Will the dealer program the FOB if I dont buy it from them?
                  3. How do I confirm the part number to ensure I get the right FOB since there may be differing frequenices used

Based on my experiences, I would suggest that you will probably be better off just gritting your teeth and paying the dealer for a new key

I say this because of how difficult it seems to be to get working immobiliser chips (RFID) for the latest VAG cars. Even if you do manage to find another passat fob there is no guarantee the immobiliser chip can be coded to your car. I have read somewhere that some VAG chips are now programmed so that once a chip has been coded to a particular car it can't be recoded to a different car. So you would need to get not only the exact chip for your car, but also a "virgin" one, and you would need to know that the remote is the correct one and the correct frequency for Oz. All in all, too many uncertainties I think.

On the older style (flip key) fobs you can see the part number and radio frequency of the remote half when you separate the two halves, I don't know how the new fobs are put together, so don't know where that info is on them.

Most dealers will progam keys that they haven't supplied (and why not, you are paying them for their time), but it might be in their best interests to not be able to code it for you (that way they will charge you this time, sell you a new key, and charge you to code it too).

                      Mate,

There's a guy in Bristol UK (he's on ebay UK) that deals in loads and loads of 2nd hand refurbished keys..not sure about the Inside parts..but reckon he'd have something to suit...he literally has a garage full of keys and all the necessary bits.

Secondly, I stumbled upon a guy in USA who has the keys, remotes and transponders (I think that's the right name). He goes by the name of mark1vws. He too would have 1000's of keys and remotes etc.

                      Hope this helps, good luck.

As gregozedobe mentioned you need to check the frequency etc. The remote you have separates the same was as the type with the key IIRC and will allow you to see the details. Once you have that info you should have enough to buy one.

To really confirm everything having Vagcom/VCDS would be handy and without it and/or the info from the keyfob I suspect that gregozedobe's advice to get the dealer to supply the lot is going to be worthwhile as one incorrect part could end up costing you more than the dealer supplied fob.

Perhaps ring around a few dealers to check prices and see if you can get the dealer you prefer to discount it?
