  • Starter Motor

No problem at the moment, but seeing I just recently replaced the alternator on my 2009 Passat CC 2.0 TDI (CBBB engine), I'd assume the original starter motor might not have too long to go.

I got a local VW dealer price for a starter motor VW-02E911023LX for AUD 683 - this price is based on giving them the old starter motor.

Hoping someone can help with a few questions:

1/ Is the starter motor fairly easy to replace in the 2.0 TDI CBBB engine? It looks like it isn't that hard and can be done from above?

2/ Can the old starter motor be repaired? With another vehicle I have, the thing that fails was the starter solenoid and I bought a cheap kit and replaced the solenoid terminals - the starter motor was as good as gold after that. Is this possible with VWs - are their repair kits out there?

3/ Are their cheaper starter motors out there?

Honestly the price of $683 seems like a pretty decent price for a genuine replacement. I assume that does not cover the labour to remove/install the starter?

I have remove the starter on my old MK6 Golf GTI, it was very simple once you move the airbox out of the way. I can only assume the diesel engine would be similar.

The Bosch part number looks to be 1986S00803; this is used in a bunch of VW group cars. Look for the part number without the X, too; the X means the part is an exchange service.

The starter should be in a reasonable location to swap out DIY; just make sure the battery is disconnected

Yeah, really just moving the airbox - looks pretty easy compared with the LandRovers. Yes, that price is for an exchange - no labour - pretty comfortable doing this one myself when the time comes.
