Hahaha.. You will see.. But unfortunately no bullbar this time( could slow me down with weight :p ) We have no exact idea how long we will take could be 10 days to two weeks.

Also a rear skid plate is on order and a water injection kit to cool down the intake air. I thought of getting done my quad tip muffler before this trip but it is bit too late now.

    • Safe driving & have fun! I'm sure you will...

Keen to hear what sort of hit your fuel economy takes regarding the Haldex controller. Also wondering if the driving components to the rear wheels are made for constant work & if everything will 'go the distance'?

This is where I bet you're wishing you bought the switchable controller... Been doing some research into this and for wear and tear plus heat generated you'd be wanting to switch it off for a long trip.

The AWD system in the Tig and Golf R etc is only meant to operate intermittently. It's really not designed for continuous use as it does get hot and doesn't have large heat sinks like some of the constant 4WD systems in Audi etc.

I think you should research little bit more into this and I told you it is not constant fourwheel drive. Yes it is used in the track and subjected to much harder conditions than freeway driving. Also you have stage 2 tune with high intake air temperatures and torques. So how many times did you go to stock mode after APR tune.

I was talking about the switchable Haldex controller so you can change between Eco, standard and race.

If you're running without a switch it'll just be stuck in race mode (as far as I understand).

Be interested in your feedback on how it all goes.

There's no pricing for Aus yet, right? I noticed it's US$199 on the US site. Does the dongle connect to the OBD-II port?

Yes the dongle plugs into the OBD-II port:

Following details from the APR mobile webpage:

                        APR Mobile Bluetooth Dongle

Wireless connection to your vehicle is simple, easy and secure. The APR Mobile Bluetooth Dongle connects to the vehicles OBD-II port and establishes a secure connection between the vehicle’s ECU and supported smart devices.

The ECU must be loaded with an APR Mobile compatible ECU Upgrade to take advantage of all supported features in their fullest. Where supported, this flash is a free upgrade to existing APR ECU upgrade customers.

The APR Mobile Dongle will only work for one vehicle. The app works on unlimited devices.

And at the moment it looks like it's only iphones that are supported:

Supported Devices Minimum Device Requirement Operating System Market

                        Bosch MED 17.x 4.2L FSI V8 (Gen 2)

And yes available only in the US at the moment. The app requires a new tune file to be downloaded to your ECU, so you'll need to go back for a reflash before the dongle will work. And also looks like the dongle is tied to the vehicle also - so won't work in any other car. So it's locked down.

                          • Happy to say that trip to Queensland went flawlessly without any mechanical problems and without getting any tickets. I guess Tig is great as a sleeper attracting little attention considering our other team got over speed ticket with double demerits :|

Tig managed to do an average about 8.6L/100 km for whole trip with 4 people on board and another 150 Kg of luggage. With this amount of weight I managed to keep up with our other car XR6 with less cargo and keep up with over takings at 100km/h when I was in leader following mode. But when I was in front, XR6 could not keep up with me through the bends and over takings.

I think new Haldex works flawlessly and it did not show any overheating issues when cruising long distances (I am sure it disengages while cruising) or binding issues in parking manures. Also unfortunately could not install my water injection kit since it did not arrive in time, but now I think it is not necessary at all considering car went beautifully without any dramas of overheating or heat soak issues

                            • Great to hear you're back Ramee and that the Tig performed flawlessly even fully loaded up.

I think you're right about the Haldex - it will just engage the rears when you need it just the Race program is more rear biased and acts more of the time (I.e. when cornering). The guys at HPA reckon it has minimal effect on fuel economy perhaps 1-2% but this obviously depends on the driving you're doing.

Pity you didn't get your water sprayer on. Sounds like I might need one this week as we have have forecast for 5 x 40+ degree days....

                              • The water injection will keep your inlet clean & allow the engine to pull in as much timing as possible.
